City, county, state, and federal officials will join the Sarasota Housing Authority (SHA) and Michaels Development Company to celebrate the first milestone in the transformation of one of Sarasota's8217;s most important and historic neighborhoods 's8211; Janie's8217;s Garden Phase I. Completed a full year ahead of schedule, this newly constructed, vibrant community is part of SHA's8217;s $150 million Newtown Redevelopment Program, which replaces poorly built and obsolete public housing. The new Janie's8217;s Garden I offers the best in family housing with 86 mixed-income apartments and a community center, where an array of supportive services will be offered to residents through Interstate Management Realty, a sister company to Michaels Development. Tours of the community and a model unit will be offered following the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

About the Sarasota Housing Authority: The Sarasota Housing Authority (SHA) was established as a public housing authority in 1938 under Florida statute to administer federal housing assistance for low, very low and extremely low-income families. Presently SHA provides subsidized housing for over 1,200 low-income families in Sarasota, FL. SHA administers 436 Public Housing apartments, 75 units of Section 8 New Construction, and 815 Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers. SHA administers an annual budget of over $10 million with a staff of 25.
