With the first turn, where the absolute majority was necessary (29 representatives out of 57), Oscar Temaru had obtained 26 votes, while Edouard Fritch and Gaston Tong Sang respectively collected 18 and 13 vote.
Previously, in their speeches, the three candidates had presented their program, each one with an assigned time one hour, in an order established by drawing of lots.
First to speak, Gaston Tong Sang, whose government was censured last on August 31, supported that he was candidate "neither by stubbornness, nor to satisfy personal ambitions".
"Censured by those which were at its sides (note, Tahoeraa of Gaston Flosse)", Gaston Tong Sang declared himself "pained to see French Polynesia engulfing itself in moving sands of the political schemes and the decline".
Beginning its short speech by a song, taken again in chorus by the elected officials of its formation, Oscar Manutahi Temaru underlined, for its part, the "internal conflicts which undermined the old majority" and which involved, according to him, "eight month of economic opposition to progress".
Affirming that it could "draw from the lessons of the errors of the past", Oscar Manutahi Temaru indicated that the discussions with Tahoeraa Huiraatira were always in hand and that the debate autonomy/independence "was exceeded".
The last to speak, Edouard Fritch stated to have a "clear and positive vision of what there is to do urgently" . He invited the forces separatists once again to vote for him, in a "spirit of reconciliation and broad opening", in order to avoid a "scenario-catastrophe", in order to "prevent that the country is inserted still a little more in the crisis".
The Council of State had, Tuesday, given an opinion indicating that the absolute majority (29 representatives) was not necessary for the election of the president of French Polynesia, to the second ballot.
According to terms' of the statute of French Polynesia, the new president has from now on a five days deadline to announce the composition of his government.
Oscar Manutahi Temaru was already a president of French Polynesia from June to October 2004, date on which it had been reversed by a motion of censure of Tahoeraa Huiraatira of Gaston Flosse.
Returned with the capacity in March 2005, following bys-election in the district of Windward Islands (Tahiti and Moorea), Oscar Manutahi Temaru had been reversed again, in December 2006, by a motion of censure voted by a "platform autonomist".
Gaston Tong Sang was then a president of French Polynesia, of the end of 2006 until August 31 last, where a new motion of censure voted by the UPLD of Temaru Oscar and part of the elected officials of Tahoeraa Huiraatira came to put a term at its governorship.
The Christian Estrosi, Secretary of State to Overseas, announced, at the time of his passage to Tahiti, at the beginning of the month, that new elections with the Parliament of French Polynesia should take place "if possible before the end of the year or in the beginning of the next year".
Temaru has five days to name a new government. The naming of a vice president and ministerial cabinet will show what effect, if any, the two months of regular talks between Flosse and Temaru will have on Tahiti's sixth government since 2004.
Tahiti's political doyen, 76-year-old Gaston Flosse, marked Temaru's victory with an historic presentation of a flower lei for his 30-year political rival. An alliance Temaru - Flosse is the most powerful team with over 60 years of political experience : '' Alter ipse amicus'' - ( A friend is another self ), specially in politics.
