SIA Joins Other Latino Greeks to Raise 4000 for St. Judes Children...



e ladies of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. (SIA) joined Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. (OPBSI) and Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, Inc (SLG) in its 3rd Annual Fundraiser to benefit St Jude's8217;s Children Hospital, raising an estimated $4000 dollars for the cause.


Queens, NY June 28, 2006 -- Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc., Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. and the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO) collaborated on a fundraising drive and pool tournament whose proceeds benefit the St. Jude Children'ss Research Hospital, the official philanthropy of NALFO.



These organizations joined together for the 3rd annual Quest for a Million Pennies, whose proceeds benefited the St. Jude Children'ss Research Hospital.



This three-month national fundraising drive was conducted by the undergraduate and graduate members of the participating organizations at various cities across the nation. We wanted to both spread awareness of Latino Greeks's commitment to this philanthropy and educate our community about the great work done by the St. Jude Children'ss Research Hospital by unifying ourselves for a cause, agreed the event coordinators: Betania Diaz & Ivone De Jesus-SIA, Leslie Baez-OPB and Ada Ospina-SLG.



Catherine D. Casquero, Bilingual Event Marketing Representative for St. Jude's8217;s, expressed after a recent visit to the Target House in Memphis, 's8220;Target House is the home to many St. Jude patients as they stay await treatmentand await Hope for a healthier life. Hope is what we have run all of our events, and this event on Saturday is no different.'s8221; She also thanked the coordinators, 's8220;I thank you for not only demonstrating teamwork & unity [in planning the event, but for attending [the event to show support for St. Jude Children'ss Research Hospital & the work that is done to save lives.'s8221;



The fundraising efforts culminated with a pool tournament on Saturday June 24, 2006 at PLAY Lounge in Queens, New York. The organizations raised an estimated $4000 for St. Jude'ss over the last three months. I was impressed with the amount of NALFO representation,'s8221; said Betania Diaz, member of SIA and one of the coordinators of the event, 's8220;most importantly [we'sre here united for a common goal: St. Jude'ss.'s8221;



The event started with a few words from the coordinating sororities as well as a representative of St. Jude'ss. Eight NALFO organizations participated in the pool tournament, with SIA taking the grand prize. In the first round SIA went against the ladies of SLG followed by the second round where they defeated the gentlemen of Lambda Sigma Upsilon. In the final round, SIA faced La Unidad Latina Lambda Upsilon Lambda (LUL).



I am always glad to kill the male egos said Nathalia Peralta, SIA member of the Alpha Chapter and one of the ladies who led SIA to victory. On St. Jude'ss Peralta added Its a plus when you can do two things at once.



Karen Pedrosa, Peralta'ss teammate and SIA member of the Epsilon Chapter, was impressed with the event as a whole. I think it was a great event for a great charity, bringing all these Greeks together in a laid back and social scene, said Pedrosa.



PLAY was full to capacity with members from all organizations, but the SIA cry vibrated through the building at the announcement of their victory. As the night came to an end, Rosa Ramos, representing the National Executive Board of SIA, reflected upon the success of the event for St. Jude'ss and SIA, I think it was such a success for the children, and its always exciting to see so many of our sisters from a number of different regions supporting NALFO.
