Market Gives Maryland a Taste of the Middle East

Sam's Caf and Market, a small market right off the Pike in Rockville, Maryland, is known throughout the area for its display of dried fruits and variety of imported foods from Middle Eastern countries, was recently featured in the Washington Post's City Guide as one of the "Best (markets and cafes) of its kind in the Washington area."

Sam Motaghi opened his market and caf nearly ten years ago, and his market boasts hard to find items such as golpar, jalapeo sauce, saffron, tabbouleh, and hummus. The caf, which seats 42 people, offers daily lunch and dinner buffets of Iranian dishes along with an a la carte menu that features items such as chicken kebab marinated in yogurt, lemon and saffron and samosas deep fried pockets made out of corn-wheat flour dough then stuffed with ground beef and potato - which are a specialty in Iran's southwestern province of Khuzestan.
