May 11, 2005 -- It's hard to imagine Helen without a Christmas shop. For over 30 years the perennial favorite of visitors to Alpine Helen, young and old alike, has been a visit to a
Christmas wonderland to get a taste of the holiday spirit even in the heat of summer. But in July, the Christmas Shoppe in Helen will close its doors for good.
The many charming shops in Helen have been an attraction for millions of visitors annually. As with anything else, each year brings a change. This year's loss of the Christmas Shoppe will
certainly create a void that will be felt for years to come. "We've always been known for having a Christmas Shoppe. It will be a real shame if we don't have one anymore," says Rita
Moran, Executive Director of the Alpine Helen and White County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Owner and operator, Sandra Maughon, is shutting down with mixed emotions. "It really isn't sales or the economy," says Maughon, "it's because of a change in my life priorities." Maughon
goes on to say that family needs and commitments have changed this last year and the retail demands are hard to balance.
During the next two months, the Christmas Shoppe inventory will be sold down and cleared out. Everything must go - from the large replica sleigh out front to each and every delightful
ornament inside. A shop full of one-of-a-kind and hard-to-find Christmas treasures will be a bargain hunters dream, or perhaps a potential entrepreneur's fantasy. Those who will wander
the shop in the next days will be among the few to claim a last piece of the Christmas tradition that has been so long in Helen.
