Please Give Generously to Goodwill

With the economy worsening, and so many people out of work, Goodwill Industries needs the public'ss donations -- clothing and other household items -- more than ever before. Officials at the charity stress that donations given in the form of cash and checks are very welcome, too.

There'ss no better way to celebrate the holidays than by helping people who are less fortunate, says Rex L. Davidson, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey, Inc. Davidson says more people have been shopping at Goodwill since the economy has worsened.

By donating to Goodwill now, donors can get tax credits in 2009. Just remember:

>    For your tax deduction to count in April 2009, you must make your donation before December 31, 2008

>    The IRS will require an itemized receipt

Goodwill accepts clothing, shoes, accessories, linens, household items, toys and even computers, which are recycled. Donated merchandise in good condition will be sold at Goodwill stores and on www.shopgoodwill.com.

To claim a tax deduction, keep an itemized list of your gifts. The IRS allows a deduction for each item in good condition, but the donor is responsible for estimating the value. Goodwill provides receipts at all attended sites.

Goodwill uses the revenue from donations to fund education and career services for people with disabilities and disadvantages, including youth programs, welfare dependency, homelessness, and lack of education and/or work experience. The New York-New Jersey Goodwill channels 93% of its revenues directly to programs and services. For more information, visit www.goodwillny.org.

Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, serves more than 120,000 persons a year and places 13,000 individuals in jobs, including almost 2,800 people with disabilities. It provides educational and recreational in-school and after-school programs for 6,500 children and youth. Altogether, New York-New Jersey Goodwill offers more than 85 programs at 30 locations and has 36 stores. It is a member of Goodwill Industries International, a network of 181 local, autonomous organizations in the United States and Canada, with 45 international associate members in 34 countries.
