Wizards Meet at the Unicorn Shoppe

There's8217;s something different going on at The Unicorn Shoppe. To begin with, the merchandise is different. The difference isn's8217;t in the wide assortment of dragons, unicorns and fairies that adorn many of the shop's8217;s shelves, which only seem to lend credence to the store's8217;s motto: 's8220;where myth meets reality.'s8221; The store's8217;s collection of authentic Tibetan Buddhist and Hindu icons and ritual tools isn's8217;t all that odd either, especially in this age of cultural diversity.

But what is odd (and downright weird to the uninitiated) is the store's8217;s offering of wizard tools, which includes the likes of wands, rune stones, Tarot decks and spell kits. Included in the mix are cauldrons, perfect for mixing magic brews, and blank 's8220;Books of Shadows,'s8221; for writing down magic spells. Indeed, one might be excused for thinking that The Unicorn Shoppe is really the school store for Hogwarts and that Harry Potter and friends might come bumbling-in at any minute.

Christine Hall, the store's8217;s proprietor (and a practicing wizard to boot), laughs at that suggestion. 's8220;I's8217;m sure that young Master Potter would pay us a visit if he were ever to visit North Carolina,'s8221; she says. 's8220;We have much better dragon's8217;s blood ink than they do in England, and our quill pens are second to none.'s8221;

She explains that the store is aimed at working-class wizards and witches.

's8220;Actually, we cater to anyone who's8217;s walking a path that's8217;s separate from what the mainstream religions have to offer. We keep our prices low, so that anyone can afford to shop here's8230;even trolls.'s8221;

Seeing the look in our faces, she reassures us that the reference to trolls was a jest. There aren's8217;t really any trolls, at least not any that us mortals can see.

The big difference at The Unicorn Shoppe, however, isn's8217;t in the out-of-the-ordinary things that they sell, but in the other activities that happen in the shop. Every Friday evening, for example, they host something called 's8220;Magical Pagan Networking Night,'s8221; where local witches and wizards can meet like-minded folks. In addition, there are Tarot readings offered every day, and numerous classes and workshops held after hours.

's8220;We try to be more than just a store,'s8221; Hall explains. 's8220;We want to be an asset to the community.'s8221;

The store is located at 607 Walnut Street, just a few blocks from Historic Old Salem, which would seem to be a fitting location for a witch store.

's8220;Some people do find that ironic,'s8221; Hall said, before pointing-out that this is not Salem, Massachusetts, where witches were burned at the stake. 's8220;The Moravians were much too tolerant for that sort of nonsense.'s8221;
