Civilian Mechanical Engineer is Important Link to Military History...

Mr. Hyman Rutkovsky has served his country for more than four decades and garnered numerous commendations from prominent military officers and a former commander-in-chief. The certificates of appreciation, awards and a letter of recognition from President Ronald Reagan are just enough praise for this civilian mechanical engineer who specialized in developing virtually every type of armament used by various branches of the U.S. Military from 1941 to 1988.

's8220;I had immense responsibilities to many members of the armed forces,'s8221; explained Mr. Rutkovsky, who now resides at Sterling Glen of Rye Brook, N.Y., an independent living senior residence in suburban Westchester County. These responsibilities included researching, developing and engineering military munitions during a 47-year period that encompassed World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War and Cold War.

Born March 27, 1918, in New York City, Mr. Rutkovsky graduated from Seward Park High School at the age of 15. He immediately enrolled in New York University's8217;s College of Engineering, attending classes in the evening for the next seven years while working part-time at National Boiler Equipment Co., in New York, N.Y., as an engineering assistant.

After graduating from NYU in 1940 at the age of 22 with a bachelor's8217;s degree in mechanical engineering, he was employed by Riley Stoker Corp., in Worcester, Mass., as an engineering design draftsman of power plant equipment. By the summer of 1941, the military was aggressively recruiting men with Mr. Rutkovsky's8217;s high-caliber qualifications. He was hired to perform work that would profoundly impact his country and the United States's8217; military successes for many years to come.

's8220;I always took my profession very seriously and recognized the magnitude and consequences of the work I did,'s8221; explained Mr. Rutkovsky. He was certified as a professional engineer and awarded a license to practice mechanical engineering in the State of New Jersey, where he lived for many years.

Reporting for work on July 7, 1941 as a project engineer at Picatinny Arsenal's8217;s Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center in Dover, N.J., was pivotal. Mr. Rutkovsky embarked on a career developing and refining munitions in virtually every form. He rose through the ranks to serve as chief of six different branches and is widely recognized for his achievements.

's8220;We weren's8217;t just producing ammunition, we were engineering new and better munitions,'s8221; he explained. 's8220;When the military came to you with a problem or complaint, golly, you did what they requested and made it better.'s8221;

To keep pace with evolving technology, Mr. Rutkovsky also pursued post-graduate studies at Stevens Institute of Technology and Rutgers University. During this time, he and his wife, Rebecca, resided in Rockaway, N.J., along with their two children, Joyce and Laurence.

For all the pressure Mr. Rutkovsky endured in his occupation, he is quite relaxed and matter-of-fact about his unique career path while residing in his apartment at Sterling Glen, where he enjoys a variety of activities. He relocated to the residence in November 2005 to be near his son, who lives close by.

While he lightheartedly walks through the residence, he is greeted by neighbors with a smile and some gentle teasing. This carefree lifestyle is in sharp contrast to the pictures adorning his apartment walls. The photographs depict a sense of official business 's8211; conservative smiles, crisply pressed uniforms and firm handshakes. 's8220;My job was not a game,'s8221; he said. 's8220;We had very serious work to do, and we got it done.'s8221;

Thanks to Rutkovsky's8217;s unwavering efforts, there are U.S. veterans and soldiers everywhere whose lives have been saved thanks to his dedication and expertise. Whether Hyman Rutkovsky admits it or not, he is an important link in America's8217;s fight for freedom.
