Minimax Consulting was retained by a Harvard Medical School researcher for statistical consulting for a paper on the policies concerning organ transplants. The data analysis for this study was particularly interesting in that it combined two very different statistical techniques to achieve the desired results.
The first stage involved the assessment of risk factors for organ transplant failure through traditional statistical analysis. Several factors were identified at this stage, such as age
of the patient, and whether the transplant candidate had recently been on dialysis. The result of this estimation procedure helped determine the exact probability of organ transplant
failure.
The second stage required the development of a custom application to integrate the first stage into a Monte Carlo analysis. This analysis simulated thousands of possible outcomes for the
medical centers, based on decisions made the transplants when considering their risk.
'sIt'ss a fascinating study,'s says Martin Barugel, Managing Director of Operations at Minimax Consulting, 'sbecause of the unique statistical approach that was used, and the potential
implications of the findings.'s
