The NCI Public Affairs and Marketing Network (PAN), a cooperative association of communications professionals working in cancer research and clinical organizations, announced new
leadership at its 2006 annual meeting, hosted this month at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY. Cynthia Manley, associate director for communications at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer
Center in Nashville, Tenn., was elected to a two-year term as Chair of the Steering Committee, and Nancy Jensen, executive director of external communications at the University of Texas
M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston was elected Vice Chair.
PAN works in close association with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Office of Communications to further public awareness of cancer research, prevention, detection and treatment. PAN
members include representatives of NCI-designated cancer centers, American Association of Cancer Institutes (AACI) cancer centers, and other related professional organizations such as the
American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), and the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS).
So much information - and misinformation - is available to the public about cancer prevention, treatment and research, Manley said. The Network provides an important avenue for
communications professionals at the nation'ss leading cancer centers and organizations to collaborate and to communicate more effectively and provide accurate information to the public
about these important issues.
Together with the National Association of Cancer Center Development Officers (NACCDO), PAN holds an annual meeting to discuss issues affecting development and communications officers at
the nation'ss cancer centers. More than 300 public affairs, marketing, and fundraising professionals attended this year'ss meeting, where topics ranged from best practices in development
to the effects of the Internet on the media and cancer communications. The joint PAN and NACCDO meeting will be held next year in San Francisco, April 28-May 1, 2007.
