The majority of the country's thirty million caregivers who assist elderly parents react to sequential events instead of proactively managing parents' care. Parent Care believes this reactive approach may subject seniors to unnecessary risks and cause harm to the environment.
In a series of articles launched today on Parent Care (http://www.parents-care.com) uses it as one of several examples to
illustrate the need for a holistic caregiving approach. Changing filters regularly has the potential to improve air quality in seniors' homes while simultaneously reducing heating costs
and elders' carbon footprint.
The series provides numerous similar synergistic examples ranging from changing light bulbs, to repairing leaking faucets and measuring the temperature of water in hot water tanks. Gillis
hopes that viewing these seemingly benign issues in a new light will cause caregivers to embrace what he calls ecologically sensitive eldercare. "When caregivers understand that
installing compact fluorescent light bulbs in stairways not only increases parents' safety but also lowers energy consumption, we will have reached a milestone", Gillis states. "Becoming
a green caregiver is a winning proposition for all."
