May 27, 2005 -- Week three in the BAS Men's League fell into the midst of the May long weekend - fortunately, only two matches were conceded via forfeit.
Division I:
River Plate went untested as Sunday League Records FC was a no-show - earning them 3 points and leaving onlookers still questioning the squad's strength. Sunday League on the other hand,
continues with its string of bad luck; beginning the season with a -3 point handicap, losing 14-0 to Richview Utd. and now, with this recent forfeit, adding yet another loss to their
table. Richview on the other hand, was able to retain 1st place with the three points they picked up when Structform Strikers proclaimed an official forfeit - still, considering that goal
difference alone separates the top 3 teams, Richview surely would have hoped for a result more beneficial then the 1-0 forfeit victory they picked up.
The other team level with Richview on points, KCM Ambassadors, were able to gain some ground as they dealt the Warriors a 6-2 loss. This result indicates clearly that that KCM is a real
contender as the Warriors are no slouches when it comes to competition. League officials have been heard commending KCM not only on their ability, but on the demeanour of the players as
well as the general organization exhibited on and off the field.
Xavier United dropped a spot from 3rd to 4th as they drew 1-1 with Armada I. The two points lost allowed the inactive River Plate to bypass them in the standings. Armada I on the other
hand continues to sit in 7th place, still not showing anyone that the indoor champions have returned. Were it not for a disallowed goal due to a misunderstanding between the match
official and both teams, one can only wonder what the landscape would look like. Having their goal disallowed saw Armada's presence quickly fade, allowing Xavier to get the go ahead goal
midway through the second half. It wasn't until late into injury time that Armada was able to equalize on a 'should it have been' penalty. Under normal circumstances, a foul in the 18
yard box, so late in the match, could have gone unnoticed.
An undermanned KFC deftly handled the early season contending Loaded Gunnerz, allowing them to maintain 5th position. The Gunnerz dropped from 6th to 8th as the results directly below
them didn't fall in their favour as The A-Team bounced back from last weeks loss to River Plate and handed B.M.A. their third consecutive loss. This result leads one to believe that to
date, The A-Team may be the most reliable litmus test within Division I.
Oakville fell to the Enforcers and the Super Strikers finally made an appearance as they defeated Stingers FC 2-0.
Division II:
In a high flying event, the Chops managed to jump 6 spots in the standings by handing Jets-Go FC a 10-3 loss. With this result and a game in hand, Jets-Go have avoided last place as the
B.T. Rangers dropped their third consecutive loss to Manz United 6-1. As a result, Manz United sit comfortably in 4th place.
Bullets FC collected a +6 goal differential from their 7-1 meeting with Los Diablos Locos - this popped them from 3rd to 2nd as they surpassed the Samba Squad who christened Nisim
International's loss column with a 5-2 win.
Despite the win, Bullets FC were unable to catch the soaring Sur Latino as they routed Sporting FC 5-1. If they can keep this pace up until midseason, Sur Latino could very quickly secure
a title - however, considering that Week 4's match up for them is with Bullets FC, this may not be an easy task.
Armada II continue their rise from the lower reaches of the table as they continue to repair the damage done to them in week 1 with their 4-3 loss to the Unknown Strikers. Jonathan Fraser
(9) and Chris deCunha (4) continue to billow the mesh with 13 goals between the two of them, in only 3 games. Their 6-3 victory over Ocean's 11 was less convincing then last week's 8-1
win, but they'll gladly take all 3 points.
If only the Unknown Strikers could say the same. Team B FC held them to a 3-3 draw as Unknown were twice forced to come from behind drawing the match level. Indoor Division II scoring
champion, George Araya managed to net himself a goal - something far less common then in previous months.
FC Cruzados quite clearly indicated to the league that last season's efforts have paid off as the team showed signs of gelling together in a 5-0 win over Brampton Athletic.
Week 4's Key Match Ups:
- Armada II v. Manz United - If Armada II wish to continue climbing the table they'll have to come out in full force against a tough Manz United squad who, I'm sure, are far from eager to
give up ground in the league standings.
- Enforcers v. Stingers FC - After raising the bar with their 4-2 win over Oakville, the Enforcers will be looking to make a statement by beating the Stingers. The Stingers on the other
hand are in dire need of a victory after 3 consecutive losses.
- Loaded Gunnerz v. The A-Team - a true test of talent and will; both teams need a victory to remain in the top half of the table and also, as alluded to earlier, The A-Team could be the
yard stick that all other teams are measured by.
- KCM Ambassadors v. Xavier United
- KFC v. Richview Utd.
- Warriors v. River Plate
All three of these match-ups have immense implications in regards to where teams will finish in the final standings. Within these 3 matches one can find all 5 top teams.
- Sur Latino v. Bullets FC - the top 2 teams go head to head, what more needs to be said.
