Team Western Road TripsWinning Streak Ends

February 25, 2005 -- Western Road Trips' indoor soccer team suffered their first loss of the season. Coming off of two overwhelming victories (16 goals for and 4 against), they were taken by surprise Tuesday at the Utah Olympic Oval by the speed and ability of team Puma.

From the opening whistle, team Puma, coming off a recent defeat to The Hippies, showed the guys from team Western Road Trips that they came to play. Puma maintained good control of the ball and drove into Western Road Trips territory and scored their first goal in the second minute of play. Puma used a combination of long upfield passes and multitude of substitutes to wear down Western Road Trips' eight players. Puma scored another goal off a rebound before Damian of Western Road Trips made precise lob shot over the Puma goal tender and into the back of the net for Western Road Trips' first goal. At half time the score was 3-1 Puma.

The second half saw Western Road Trips tighten their play and get many more shots on goal. Brody and Nate, from Western Road Trips, each scored a goals in the second half and Puma got two goals for a final score of 5-3. These teams will match up again on March 22nd and Western Road Trips hopes to fare much better.

"A couple experienced players Justin and James were both absent from the game which left us a little short on leg power and ball control compared to team PUMA but overall they just played better soccer than we did. It will be a good match up when we play them later in the season and have the whole squad out." said Western Road Trips' player and team organizer Pete Van Slooten about the defeat.

The game took place at the Utah Olympic Oval on an ice hockey rink covered with artificial turf. The same rink was used as a hockey practice facility in the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. The "North Sheet" as it is called is the largest indoor soccer field in Utah and provides a good mix of long passes and fast play because the ball can be played off of the walls similar to hockey and is only considered out of bounds if it goes over the plexiglass "boards" that form the wall around the rink.

Western Road Trips' is a loosely knit group of outdoor enthusiasts from four countries that all ended up in Utah this winter because of the abundant snowfall and good resorts. Pete and Nate, are Utah locals and owners of Western Road Trips VW Camper Rental Company (www.westernroadtrips.com) here in Salt Lake city, Jona and Brody, worked on a hot shot forest fire crew over the summer and now ski at Solitude Resort full time, Steve and Justin, worked together on the Alaska Railroad together this summer and now ride full time at Solitude Resort, and Jak, the goalkeeper and acclaimed chef at Snowbird Resort are all from various parts of the United States. Juan, another chef at Snowbird, is from Peru. James, a snowboard instructor at Snowbird is from the UK but splits his year between New Zealand and Snowbird. Damian, the only player to stay on the field for the entire game on Tuesday, is a snowboard instructor at Snowbird and splits his year between Snowbird and resorts in his native Argentina.

Western Road Trips' next game is Tuesday, March 1st at 7:55 PM against team Wells Fargo at the Utah Olympic Oval.
