Players will converge on a Bronx basketball court this weekend for the 4th Annual Gardiner Memorial Basketball Tournament. Teams from local communities, and even as far away as Mississippi, will show off their skills in the two day competition while spectators enjoy free food and beverages courtside. In addition to the tournament, which is sponsored by Gersowitz, Libo 's38; Korek, P.C., three college-bound community members will each be awarded $1,500 in scholarships. In addition, the event provides the opportunity for families from the community and abroad who have suffered a tragic loss of a loved one to be recognized and supported.
The tournament has grown into a really special event over the last four years and we are so happy to be awarding scholarships to help these students as they enter college, Dexter Gardiner
said. Everyone always has a great time getting to know each other on and off the court, celebrating our lives while honoring those we dearly miss, and enjoying a little friendly
competition.
The tournament, which is the Gardiner Family Foundation'ss major event, was founded by Dexter Gardiner in memory of family members who passed away in 2006. After losing his mother and
sister in 2006, he lost 5 family members and a close friend in an automobile accident on the Bronx River Parkway in July of that year. The Gardiner Memorial Basketball Classic, which
began as a small community event, is now a foundation that reaches out to families who are suffering from the loss of loved ones offering them emotional and spiritual support.
It is truly wonderful to have so many teams coming out to compete on the court and celebrate the achievements of three great kids, said Jeff S. Korek, a partner in Gersowitz, Libo 's38;
Korek, P.C. The Gardiner Family Foundation does fantastic work in the community and I am honored to be a part of this year'ss tournament.
Korek and Gardiner met at a pick-up basketball game three years ago. Korek and Gardiner continued to play basketball in the same amateur league, leading to Korek and his firm to support
the foundation and sponsor the annual tournament.
(8) selected teams will compete in the tournament which begins on Saturday and will culminate in a championship game Sunday afternoon. The games take place on the outdoor basketball
courts on West 192nd Street and Jerome Avenue in the Bronx with each day'ss games kicking off at twelve noon. In case of rain, the tournament will be moved to Gaucho'ss Gym at 478 Gerard
Avenue in the Bronx.
