May 23, 2006 -- Catanduanes International Association, Inc., (CIAI) a group of former residents, families and friends of Filipinos from the small island of Catanduanes, Philippines will hold its 6th Grand Reunion from August 4-6, 2006 in Chicago, Illinois to plan the 2007-2008 medical missions to Catanduanes, Philippines. The group has over 1,000 immigrant members from the United States, Canada and the Philippines and aims to render medical assistance to the medically deprived people of the 576-square mile (1,492 square kilometers)-island. The Grand Reunion is hosted by the Chicago Chapter.
Dr. Virgilia A. Guerrero, current president of the association will present her report of the 6th medical mission to Catanduanes that has served over 4,000 patients with 101 major surgeries and an equal number of minor surgeries. The medical missions occur every three years. The people of the island gratefully receive the badly-needed medical care.
Plans are underway for the upcoming medical mission for the year 2007-2008 where volunteers from the United States, Canada and the Philippines are tapped. The local government headed by Congressman Joseph Santiago, mayors, business-leaders, private organizations and other civic-minded people warmly shows their support to the organization by providing logistical support, dinners and reception to the volunteers.
Catanduanes is known as the "land of the howling winds" and nestles into the ends of the Pacific Ocean. The island is ravaged by storms with intensity that varies from worse to worst. The people have become so accustomed to the heavy typhoons that destruction of material possessions has never shattered the spirit of the Catandunganon.
This is the same spirit that the immigrants have brought with them to the United States, Canada and other parts of the world.
As a means of giving back to the community, the former residents have banded together to organize the 7th medical mission to Catanduanes, Philippines.
Similar groups like CIAI are replicated in various parts of the United States, each group linked by a common bond to their own geographical roots. There are 7,107 islands in the Philippines, depending on the tide. Catanduanes was visited by Juan de Salcedo in 1573. It was known as an early center for shipbuilding during the Spanish regime. The province is rich in heritage and in historical churches. Catanduanes is abundant in natural resources such as an ocean that teems with tuna, herring, blue marlin, grouper and mineral deposits such as gold, copper, iron, manganese, clay, coal, limestone and marble which remain pristine and untouched to this day. The island remains frozen in time. Anyone interested in volunteering for the 7th medical mission may contact Dr. Virginia A. Guerrero at tel: (708) 544-9343; Fax: (708) 544-5134; email: or Edna V. Wenning, Esq. (626) 795-0747; fax (626) 795-0780.
Members are encouraged to confirm their reservations for the August 4-6, 2006 reunion as soon as possible.
