Here We Go Again Super Bowl Sunday With an Estimated 8 Billion Bet...

It'ss hard to escape the excitement, hype and media coverage Super Bowl Sunday brings each year. Everywhere you turn, evidence of this day is proudly displayed, enticing people to participate in the festivities on some level. In the supermarket, Super Bowl veggie, fruit and cold cut platters greet us; In restaurants, drink displays of the special drink of the Super Bowl and recipes for our special 'sSuper Bowl's menu items are available; In the workplace, conversations turn to who are you putting your money on, where are you going to celebrate, and pressure to get in the office pool is often unbearable. TV sales increase this time of year (widescreen of course) to watch the game, and TV sports announcers talk on and on about the point spreads and everything even remotely associated with the event. It'ss on the radio. It'ss in the newspaper. It'ss online. It'ss everywhere!

An estimated $8 billion will be bet on the Super Bowl, the most heavily wagered single event of the year, some legally's8230;most illegally. There will be those who place their bets in Vegas, at work, with the local bookie, or between friends. There will be those who gamble compulsively, for whom this will be a last attempt to get even for the year. And then there will be those throughout our communities, workplaces, circles of acquaintances, friends and families who are working to recover from a gambling problem who, I think we can agree, will find the challenge to avoid betting on the Super Bowl to be inescapable.

Pointing to these examples is not in condemnation, but rather an attempt to raise awareness of the extreme difficulty that those who are making every effort to recover from a gambling problem will face, when trying to steer clear of temptation.

Pat Fowler, Executive Director of the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling (FCCG) , wants people to know ahead of time that there are options available if all of the Super Bowl hype is too much to handle. With Sunday'ss game approaching, most bettors, many compulsive, will not experience a big win and will instead find themselves in even more despair then before. The FCCG offers a 24-hour problem gambling HelpLine with resources and assistance available, and encourages those already feeling anxiety over the game, to call 888-ADMIT-IT before placing that bet. Getting help from someone who understands is an option .

If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, help is available at 888-ADMIT-IT, 888-236-4848.
