Prince Charles to Unveil New Battle of Britain London Monument on Sunday 18th September 2005
After some five years of planning and fundraising the new Battle of Britain London Monument (no such memorial exists in London) will eventually be unveiled by Prince Charles at a ceremony on the Embankment around lunchtime on Sunday 18th September 2005.
The Monument has been designed by the sculptor Paul Day and features magnificent reliefs depicting the Battle of Britain and bronze plaques with the names of the participating pilots.
The idea for this Monument was pioneered by the Founder of the Battle of Britain Historical Society, Bill Bond, and his vision has made possible by the excellent fundraising efforts of the Fundraising Committee Chaired by the Rt Hon Lord Tebbit and incliding Dame Vera Lynn and the actor Edward Fox.
Apart from an impressive list of Corporate Sponsors major donors include Sir Paul McCartney, Jimmy Savile and the Czech Republic.
However although 1.66m has been raised to date another 80,000 is needed to ensure the proper upkeep of this impressive Monument in the future. Clearly any publicity is welcome to this end.
A whole wealth of information and photographs is available on the website www.bbm.org.uk , and also the Battle of Britain Historical Society site www.battleofbritain.net/bobhsoc . Further details are available from Edward McManus, Chief Executive of the appeal on 01892 532 132.
