Jewish Students Throughout San Diego County are Coordinating Their Efforts to Increase Community Awareness About Breast Cancer

Jewish undergraduate and graduate students throughout San Diego County are coordinating their efforts to increase community awareness about a form of cancer that will change the lives of 200,000 women this year.

On Sunday, October 23, 2005 at 8:30am, Hillel of San Diego joins the American Cancer Society at Balboa Park in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. The 4.5 mile pledge-walk benefits both local and national programs for breast cancer. The walk takes about three hours and requires no minimum fundraising commitment. Over a hundred Hillel students are making the walk as part their continuing commitment to serve local and global communities.

In the past eight years, this event has had a tremendous impact on the San Diego community, through raising awareness and valuable proceeds towards winning the fight against breast cancer. More than half of the funds raised stay directly in the San Diego community to continue patient care programs such as "Look Good, Feel Better" and "Road to Recovery."

Hillel of San Diego, The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, involves San Diego university-aged students in a plethora of activities and programs whose goals are to foster a lasting commitment to Jewish life. Inherently, a major component of these opportunities involves Tzedek, or engaging in the betterment of the community. Through involvement, advocacy, service and education, this dynamic event is bringing students together as they connect themselves with the greater San Diego community to contribute to the greater good.

Shortly after students hear about this event, they discover a connection to the cause and in turn, encourage more Jewish students to take part in this amazing opportunity. One example is a guest speaker at Hillel of San Diego's Yom Kippur service. Elizabeth Martin, a breast cancer survivor is coming to share her experience in overcoming the disease. She hopes to inspire students to think about how they can live their lives to the fullest in the coming year. In further anticipation of the event, Hillel of San Diego is working with students at many campuses throughout San Diego and conducting various educational events raising awareness and interest from Jewish students. Alison Breskin, a senior at San Diego State University has recently said, "I already set the date aside and my good friend is coming into town that weekend and we are going to walk together."

Resulting from the incredible commitment of students, this event is sure to be a memorable and enriching experience. Hillel of San Diego invites the community to join our team and walk with us on Sunday, October 23.
