With Hurricane Wilma looming, it is possible that thousands of people may find themselves displaced and in need of housing, much like the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Nikki Alexander and Bridget Kelly, from Wisconsin, saw this need following Katrina and began helping. After meeting online, the pair began matching hurricane victims with available housing using the Internet, the telephone, and newspaper ads. Because of their selfless efforts, they have been able to connect over 100 victims with housing.
Chicago-based web site simply40.com also seeks to help the victims of the disaster. The web site is sponsoring simply aware, a series of quarterly writing and photography contests. The contests aim to help raise awareness regarding adverse socio-economic conditions and contribute resources to the victims of these conditions including those suffering because of recent catastrophes such as Hurricane Katrina. simply aware also provides aspiring writers and photographers a forum to express themselves while earning recognition and reward for their talents.
A large portion of the proceeds, received via contest entry fees, will be donated to victims struggling with this quarter s focus, homelessness in America. simply40 also directed those wanting to help out to the Baton Rouge Area Foundation (BRAF) immediately following Katrina.
"America is one of the wealthiest countries in the world but the pervasive, unwarranted homelessness here is hushed, like it's 'dirty laundry.' Hurricane Katrina hit and not only exacerbated the problem but brought it out in the open. simply40 is here to help wash the laundry," says Max Elliott, Managing Editor of simply40.com.
More information regarding simply aware can be found on the simply40 web site, as well as articles on Hurricane Katrina.
