June 24, 2005 -- Finding a date, or a dozen dates, just became easier with the launch of SpeedMatchmaking.com. The new site currently tracks 69 speed dating services in 169 cities around
the world, for a total of 400 listing combinations, representing thousands of events per month.
Besides providing an event finder for speedy singles, the site offers insights into the fast-paced speed dating industry:
Only a few years after its introduction, the speed dating concept has already gone global. SpeedMatchmaking.com currently tracks speed dating in the United States (254 listings), United
Kingdom (91 listings), Canada (22 listings), Australia (22 listings), Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand and Japan. Plans are underway to track events in other languages.
New speed dating services are still opening at a rapid rate, but only a few achieve success beyond their city of origin. Of the listed speed dating services, only 1/3 had events in more
than one city, and the top five services accounted for nearly 2/3 of listings.
Speed dates vary in length from 3 to 8 minutes, depending on the service organizing an event. In a sample of 60 speed dating services, 33% used the 3 minute format. The remaining services
were nearly evenly divided between 4 minutes (15%), 5 minutes (15%), 6 minutes (13%), 7 minutes (10%) and 8 minutes (13%).
Speed dating started as a matchmaking tool for Jewish singles, and its popularity has spread to others religious, ethnic and lifestyle groups, including Asian, Athletic, Black, Catholic,
Christian, Gay, Interracial, Jewish, Latin, Lesbian, and Tall.
