Smart Connection Enterprise v. 4.1 Features Enhanced Web Editor

The worldâ 8364; 8482;s most popular and powerful editorial solution has been beefed up even more, as WoodWing Software is preparing to release version 4.1 of its industry-leading Smart Connection Enterpriseâ 8222;¢ system, featuring an enhanced Web Editor.

The new version of Smart Connection Enterprise will be featured at IfraExpo 2005, the international publishing-industry trade show set for Leipzig, Germany, on October 17-20. WoodWing officials say theyâ 8364; 8482;re excited for people to get a look at the powerful new features and enhancements â 8364;" particularly the Web Editor.

Smart Connection Enterprise is the industryâ 8364; 8482;s leading editorial solution for Adobe® InDesign® and InCopy®. With the enhancements in version 4.1, the popular editorial system is now more powerful than ever.

â 8364; 339;This enhanced Web Editor is going to be a huge benefit for all sorts of publications,â 8364; said Erik Schut, President of WoodWing Software. â 8364; 339;Itâ 8364; 8482;s going to allow journalists and editors to do much more of their work through a Web browser. This is going to be especially beneficial to magazines, book publishers and other publications that use a lot of freelance writers.â 8364;

Schut explained that the enhanced Web Editor gives writers and editors the ability to write-to-fit an article and do other editing duties using just a browser. â 8364; 339;The great thing about this is that users donâ 8364; 8482;t have to install any special software,â 8364; Schut said. â 8364; 339;They only need a Web browser.â 8364;

Another advantage of Enterpriseâ 8364; 8482;s Web Editor â 8364;" one of the reasons why it is so popular among customers â 8364;" is the fact that it has fewer hardware requirements than using a full-blown word processor. This means users who might be using older computers will now be able to join the editorial workflow. The enhanced Web Editor also gives users the ability to see a preview of article inside the page, as well as a PDF.

WoodWing will be using Adobeâ 8364; 8482;s new InDesign Server version to achieve the write-to-fit and preview and capabilities for its Web Editor, and Schut said the possibilities are endless with the enhanced system.

â 8364; 339;Say, for example, youâ 8364; 8482;re a magazine publisher with hundreds of freelance writers and editors all over the world,â 8364; Schut said. â 8364; 339;In the past, those people wouldnâ 8364; 8482;t have been able to write-to-fit in the Web Editor, or to see their edits live in the InDesign layout of the publication. Now, just by using a browser, they can open pages, they can write-to-fit and they can edit articles by using the Web editor. Itâ 8364; 8482;s going to make their life much easier and more efficient.â 8364;

The enhanced Web editor is just one of the new features of Smart Connection Enterprise v. 4.1. WoodWing has made a host of other enhancements on both the client and server side, all of which will be on display at IfraExpo 2005.

Jeroen Sonnemans, the director of European Sales & Marketing, said that publications of all types and sizes will love this new version of Smart Connection Enterprise.

â 8364; 339;The reason that Smart Connection Enterprise is the most-installed InDesign-based editorial system in the world is that itâ 8364; 8482;s the perfect solution for so many different types of publications,â 8364; Sonnemans said. â 8364; 339;From the smallest newspaper to the biggest magazine company, Enterprise will allow you to do your job easier, better and more efficiently. Thatâ 8364; 8482;s even more true now.â 8364;

Among the new features:

-    Integration with DataPlan JournalDesigner. JournalDesigner is a third-party product offering planning functionality. Enterprise version 4.1 offers full bi-directional integration with JournalDesigner.

-    Enhanced Iintegration with Callas MadeToPrint. Callas MadeToPrint is another third-party product, offering advanced preflight, output and PDF features. Enterprise version 4.1 enhances the existing integration to get a more flexible and smooth integration.

-    Publication overview features. The Publication Overview Web application has been enhanced with several new features, including an option of right-to-left reading for Japanese users, additional view modes, more flexible page numbering and direct access to meta-data of all objects, as well as an integrated instant messaging functionality.

-    Database improvements. This new version of Enterprise provides full text searches for Oracle users and a complete transaction system. This provides better security for documents and keeps meta-data consistent in the event that any operation fails.

-    Image handling from within InCopy. Images can now be placed or cropped within InCopy, another big step forward in efficiency for publications where the sub-editor is selecting images for an article.

-    Enhanced InCopy templates. InCopy templates can now be generated with geometry from InDesign layouts. As with InCopy files, InCopy templates have the ability to store information about the geometry of the layout. Users can now take templates home and create articles with the layout information included.

-    Enhanced offline support. Enterprise has always been the best solution on the market for remote usage, but now it has become even more flexible for disconnected users.

-    Improved imaging support. Imaging functionality has been greatly enhanced. The most obvious is the seamless integration with Photoshop®, as photo editors can now query the Enterprise database from within Photoshop and directly open, create and save images to Enterprise staying within their favorite image editor. Also on the InDesign side, improvements have been made to ease image handling, including the ability to upload local images from within InDesign directly into Enterprise, the ability to create image reservations and many more changes to make the best in class even better.

With all the enhancements and new features that have been added, Schut is inviting all the participants at this yearâ 8364; 8482;s IfraExpo to stop by the WoodWing booth to see Smart Connection Enterprise version 4.1 in person.

â 8364; 339;Weâ 8364; 8482;re very excited about this new version of Enterprise, and we canâ 8364; 8482;t wait for people to get a look at everything it has to offer,â 8364; Schut said. â 8364; 339;We know theyâ 8364; 8482;re going to fall in love with it.â 8364;
