University of Kansas and University of Missouri fans joined the fight against hunger last Thursday at M's38;I Bank on the Plaza and donated more than 17,000 pounds of food and more than $6,000 in monetary contributions at the M's38;I Bank Border Showdown Pep Rally to benefit Harvesters -- The Community Food Network.
M's38;I Bank was thrilled with the results of the food drive and was honored to be part of such an amazing effort, said Pam Berneking, M's38;I Bank Kansas City Region president.
In five hours, fans of the University of Missouri donated 9,186 pounds while the fans of the University of Kansas donated 8,684 pounds of food for a grand total of 17,870 pounds of food.
The University of Kansas supporters also donated $3,232.89 and the University of Missouri supporters donated $3,069.69, which totaled $6,302.58.
Because one dollar equals five meals and 1.3 pounds of food equals one meal, the M's38;I Bank Border Showdown Pep Rally collected enough food and money for 45,259 meals, said Paula Pratt,
Director of Community Outreach for Harvesters. This truly was an incredible effort and Harvesters wants to thank all those who donated time, money and food to the cause.
The Border Showdown food drive for Harvesters continues throughout the week and will come to a close this Sat., Nov. 29, at the Border Showdown football game at Arrowhead Stadium. As of
Tues., Nov. 25, at 3 p.m., the University of Missouri fans were in the lead in the food drive competition, having donated 54,873 meals. The University of Kansas fans were not far behind
with 50,302 meals.
The goal is to raise enough food and money to supply 150,000 meals, Berneking said. We encourage the Kansas City community to donate to the Border Showdown food drive for Harvesters and
not only help us reach, but surpass our goal for Harvesters.
