San Diego Athletes Cycling 24 Hours in a Freezer for Well Known Charity

Local San Diego resident Mike Pierce, or better known as Antarctic Mike, and Willy Stewart, or better known as one-arm Willy, are back in another endurance event at Miramar Cold Storage. Last October they ran a full 26.2-mile marathon inside the freezer. This time, they's8217;re going much longer. Mike and Willy plan to cycle on spin bikes inside the freezer for 24 straight hours, only breaking for the bathroom. Both Mike and Willy are veterans of long distance athletics and see this ride as a training ride for bigger things to come. This past January 2006, Mike became the first person to complete back-to-back marathons in consecutive days at Patriot Hills, a base camp some 600 miles from the South Pole in Antarctica. Mike is planning a subsequent trip to the Antarctic this December when he will be one of very few people from around the world attempting a 100k (about 62.5 miles) run on the ice shelf.

Mike also believes that many important lessons for successful living are demonstrated in the stories from early Antarctic exploration. 's8220;Success is achieved when we push ourselves out of our comfort zone for a reason and purpose that is bigger than ourselves's8221;, says Antarctic Mike. 's8220;Some of the most inspiring stories of hope, courage and determination come from the early Antarctic pioneers like Shackleton. I believe that our businesses, associations, schools, and communities can never have too many great stories and examples of people pushing themselves in new ways for others to be inspired by.'s8221;

Mike and Willy are running to support the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Willy himself is an amputee and Mike's8217;s wife, Angela, is permanently disabled from a 1985 rock climbing accident in Colorado. 's8220;I really have a heart for people with disabilities. Being married to Angela for nearly 16 years has taught me a lot about what people with disabilities go through on a day-to-day basis. I am grateful that I can channel my talents and interests to bring awareness to people who are in need of help. Many people see what I am doing as remarkable or heroic. The truth of the matter is that people like Willy and Angela are the real heroes.
