Texas Hosts Hang Gliding Competition Featuring Top US Pilots

The best Hang Glider Pilots in the U.S. will flock to Big Spring, TX, for the 2009 U.S. Hang Gliding Championships. The entire five man US World Team, who recently competed in World Championship in France, will be taking part in the final segment to determine the US national champion.

Hang Gliding pilots from across the U.S. will participate in this event that requires pilots to engage in unpowered flight. Hang gliding competitions are like an aerial sail boat race where clouds act like gas stations of lifting air for the pilots to climb and glide to the next point around a course.

Big Spring hosted the World Hang Gliding Competition in 2007, only the second time the world'ss best pilots have come to the USA in 30 years.

Big Spring is one of the best places for closed course soaring in the world because of the well appointed Big Spring Airport, smooth roads in every direction, lack of turbulence and some of the most consistent weather and soaring conditions . Big Spring provides the most civilized combination of factors for a hang gliding race, says meet organizer, David Glover.

The United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (USHPA) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the growth of sport flying in foot-launchable soaring aircraft. USHPA develops, standardizes, and administers programs that foster and promote practices for safe flying. USHPA maintains a working relationship with the FAA, and other regulatory organizations, to insure continued access to airspace. The organization also maintains relationships with public and private entities to promote the procurement and maintenance of flying sites. USHPA is headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado. For more information on hang gliding and paragliding go to www.ushpa.aero or call (800) 616-6888.
