Representatives from the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission'ss (IOGCC) 38-member states wrapped up their three-day Midyear Issues Summit in Anchorage, Alaska, today, which focused on balancing the production of domestic oil and natural gas with environmental protection.
IOGCC Chairman Gov. Brad Henry emphasized the importance of contributions from IOGCC member states in providing for the nation'ss energy needs, economic recovery and national security in
his message to participants.
IOGCC member states have successfully demonstrated that, through effective state-led regulation, oil and gas production can coexist with responsible stewardship of the environment, said
Henry.
Henry also cited that states must continue to lead the way as regulatory experts in providing solutions to key issues such as hydraulic fracturing, carbon capture and storage and energy
education.
Gov. Sarah Palin praised IOGCC member states on their common goal in assisting and assuring the responsible development of oil and gas in her speech to participants Tuesday. In addition,
she emphasized the importance of Alaska'ss contribution to the nation'ss energy security.
In Alaska, my administration'ss focus is the responsible and safe development of energy so that our vast reserves can contribute more to the rest of the nation; therefore, making our
nation less reliant on foreign sources of energy, said Palin.
In other business, the commission launched a task force which will study transportation issues associated with the production and capture of CO2. The two-year grant that is funded by the
U.S. Department of Energy and will be conducted in partnership with the Southern States Energy Board is a continuation of IOGCC'ss work in providing regulatory recommendations for carbon
capture and storage (CCS) and the commercial use of CO2. CCS is one of the nation'ss most immediate and viable strategies for mitigating the release of CO2 into the atmosphere.
