Horizontal Drilling Taps New Energy Resources Oil and Gas Recovery...

Horizontal Solutions International (HSI), the largest independent geonavigation oil and gas consultancy, announced that drilling for new oil and gas resources among its clients has increased more than 100% over the last 12 months due to higher energy prices and development of shale gas reservoirs such as the Barnett Shale, Haynesville Shale, Woodford Shale and the Marcellus Shale. The company foresees continued growth through 2008.

HSI'ss experienced geologists using proprietary software make it possible to extract oil and gas that would have been otherwise unattainable by drilling vertical wells.

Unlike conventional wells, horizontal wells can make dramatic turns deep within the earth. Because most gas and oil reservoirs are stratified horizontally, a vertical well only taps a small portion of the reservoir. Alternatively, a properly guided horizontal well can bore along the length of a reservoir, increasing production efficiency. Horizontal drilling sites can also be located miles away.

According to HSI, the trick to getting the most out of a horizontal well is to Stay in the Zone, the zone being the natural reservoir. HSI geologists use geonavigation to track the location of the drill bit and guide it through unseen geological formations and faults. It can be a challenge, with target layers sometimes no more than five feet thick.

HSI has been perfecting this process since 1996, to become the largest geonavigation consultancy in America today, having successfully navigated thousands of horizontal wells across the United States, Canada and many other locations from the Persian Gulf to Australia. The firm'ss client list doubles as who'ss-who of the energy industry, ranging from international energy companies like Conoco-Phillips, Exxon Mobil and Shell to respected independent producers like Chief Oil and Gas, Range Resources, and Petrohawk Energy.

HSI President and veteran petroleum geologist Ken Bowdon drilled the first U.S. exploratory horizontal well in 1987. Nine years later, Mr. Bowdon founded Horizontal Solutions International upon completing the exclusive software program and modeling system which HSI uses to make horizontal drilling precise and effective.

Bowdon developed a pioneering geonavigational methodology that he calls True Stratigraphic Position Modeling (TSPM). TSPM uses gamma ray data recorded along a horizontal wellbore path, allowing HSI geologists to identify faults and track the position of the drill bit to stay in the zone.

Data from IHS Energy, a private energy statistics and information agency, confirms that wells drilled using TSPM geonavigational consulting services from HSI out produce all other wells by almost 30% at peak production. Enhanced output and more thorough reservoir development translate to more efficient development of existing oil and gas resources that can help meet America'ss immediate energy needs.

Most recently, HSI'ss consulting expertise help make development of Shale Gas Plays such as the Barnett Shale more economic. The Barnett and other Shale Gas plays will play a big role in the nation'ss long-term energy solution. HSI'ss geologists guided more than 1,100 horizontal wells in Shale Gas plays across the country, where accurate horizontal drilling is key to avoid drilling and production hazards such as faults which may introduce water from an underlying aquifer.

We use HSI for every well we drill, says Tony Carvalho, SVP of Chief Oil and Gas LLC. Horizontal wells are more profitable. They recover more oil and gas from the target formation.

Mr. Carvalho sees expert geonavigation consulting as a necessity for modern drilling because it saves time, minimizes risk, and increases well productivity. Before HSI technology, everyone was guestimating with little reliability. HSI just has more successful wells, he added.

HSI geonavigation consulting services with TSPM give horizontal drilling operators in the Barnett Shale and around the world critical information they need to thoroughly develop existing energy resources. In addition to geonavigation consulting, HSI also licenses its proprietary geonavigation software to companies with geonavigation experience on staff. For more information about Horizontal, go to www.horizontalsi.com
