"The California economy is sputtering," said Jon C Mejia, national sales manager for Amlex. "And based on calls we're getting from commercial real estate agents, this is just the tip of the iceberg."
When Amlex asked restaurant operators a series of questions about the economy, a majority of them responded that they are scaling back expansion plans.
"This is as bad as any recession I've ever seen," said one restaurant owner. "It seems more and more people are nesting and cooking at home to save money."
With gas and other commodity prices exploding, both consumers and operators alike are bracing themselves for what appear to be turbulent financial waters ahead.
