Caducys, L.L.C., an early stage medical electronics company announced today that it has been granted a Notice of Allowability by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The company
will receive a fundamental patent on a system utilizing RFID and other detection technologies focused on counting and accounting of items used during surgical procedures.
"The Notice of Allowability for this part of the Caducys intellectual property portfolio defines our solution as unique, and coupled with the market validation work we have done with our
solution, stakes out our position as the leader in this marketplace. We expect the actual patent award to take place shortly." said David Lacinski, President of Caducys.
The CountORtm system under development at Caducys integrates RFID and metal detection technologies to create a cost effective handheld system that enables operating room personnel to
account for sponges and instruments before, during and after surgical procedures. "This award is very timely because of the increased focus on patient safety as well reducing the cost of
healthcare. All of these concerns are addressed through the CountORtm system." Lacinski said.
Studies that have been undertaken by various organizations such as Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard School of Public Health and results subsequently published in the New England
Journal of Medicine describe the issues and frustrations involved in performing the counts. The alternative technologies to Caducys, such as bar codes, have tried to address the
shortcomings of the counting process in the past, but those alternatives have been unsuccessful or at best solved only a portion of the counting issue. To address these shortcomings,
Caducys assembled a team of signal processing experts to address the problem. The team included individuals whose contributions have led to many patents and prior breakthroughs, and who
have experience in difficult signal environments involving mobile communications, radar, RFID, and laser communications. Since many of these approaches are novel, Caducys continues to
pursue protection in both the United States and internationally for the key technology and systems used in the Caducys products.
