New Incisionless Surgical Technique Introduced by South FloridaDoctor...

For the first time ever, a successful colorectal surgery has been performed using a new procedure that completely eliminates the need for a 3-inch incision typically required with the standard laparoscopic approach used for the procedure. Dr. Avraham Belizon, whose practice is the Minimally Invasive Colon 's38; Rectal Surgery of South Florida (http://www.floridacolonandrectaldoctors.com/index.asp), performed the advanced surgical technique at Delray Beach Medical Center using advanced laparoscopic instruments in a new way.

The announcement comes at the same time as two other milestones achieved by Belizon for single-incision surgery in recent weeks. In addition to the incisionless surgery, four weeks ago he forged new ground with one of Palm Beach County'ss first single-incision gall bladder removals. And two weeks ago, he pioneered another single-incision colon removal for a cancer patient.

As the line between technology and medicine continues to blur, experts in minimally invasive techniques like Belizon are establishing new benchmarks in the standard of care. Thousands of South Florida patients each year require some sort of colorectal surgery that can now be a safer, less stressful experience, explained Belizon. The new procedures will reduce blood loss during surgery, decrease post-operative pain, speed recovery time, reduce internal scarring, and also improve the cosmetic implications of surgery.

New hope for patients with cancer and other disease

The new procedures have vast implications. Approximately 1 million people across the U.S. are diagnosed with gallbladder disease annually, and more than 600,000 undergo surgery each year to relieve painful gallstones. Additionally, about 150,000 people annually are diagnosed with colon or rectal cancer, and often require surgery to treat the disease. Other colorectal conditions requiring surgery affect hundreds of thousands of patients each year.

I feel like I'sm brand new. All of the symptoms and discomfort I had before are gone, said James Burns, the patient who received the incisionless procedure approximately six weeks ago. I was up on my feet the same afternoon as my surgery, and out of the hospital in two days. Dr. Belizon really helps you heal up quickly.

Burns, 59, of Delray Beach, had surgery to correct rectal prolapse. The procedure is still often performed in traditional open surgery with a large incision in the abdomen. But until now, even when performed using a laparoscopic approach, the technique still required a 3-inch incision in the lower abdomen and up to five days of recovery time in the hospital. It has always really bothered me that most of the procedure was being performed laparoscopically, but we still had to make the long incision at the very end to complete it, said Belizon. Now, we can complete the entire procedure with only a few tiny entry points for the laparoscopic instruments and no sutures.

Better care is also now a reality for gall bladder disease, one of the more common conditions in the United States. Recovery time was very fast for Virgina Cardentey, 55 of Delray Beach, who underwent the single-incision gall bladder removal by Belizon. My experience was wonderful. In two days, I felt better and could do everything again. In one week, the incision had disappeared. said Cardentey. She was out of the hospital the same day and returned to work within a week.

Joan Terwilliger, also of Delray Beach, received a single-incision colon removal due to suspected colon cancer two weeks ago on Friday, May 1. She was released from the hospital just three days later. It went very smoothly, said Terwilliger. After just a few days, I was up and walking, and able to eat everything I used to without a problem.

Belizon, a long-time proponent, instructor and researcher of minimally invasive techniques (http://www.floridacolonandrectaldoctors.com/procedures.asp), says he will continue to break new ground in surgical procedures whenever possible. Ultimately, we want to be able to provide the most compassionate care possible for our patients. If there'ss a new technique I can perform to achieve the same result with a better outcome, I want to offer that to my patients, he said.

About Minimally Invasive Colon 's38; Rectal Surgery of South Florida

Minimally Invasive Colon 's38; Rectal Surgery of South Florida was founded by Dr. Avraham Belizon (http://www.floridacolonandrectaldoctors.com/about.asp) in 2008. Belizon is a graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He completed a surgical residency at the North Shore Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York and a Fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Florida. In addition to his surgical training, Belizon, is specially trained in laparoscopic and minimally invasive techniques which provide patients with quicker recovery, shorter hospital stays, and less scarring than patients who have conventional surgery.

Belizon has published numerous articles on surgical procedures. Most significantly, he has published landmark studies that looked at the benefits provided by laparoscopic surgery and other minimally invasive techniques. These articles have had a direct impact on the current management of colon and rectal diseases. As a result of his studies and publications, Belizon has frequently lectured at many symposiums and community groups locally, nationally and internationally.

Belizon has won multiple awards for both his research leadership and his excellent clinical skills. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery.
