Latinos discover Charlotte on the Web

With the Hispanic population growing at a rapid pace in Charlotte, two local businessmen teamed up to launch a Spanish Web site that gives newcomers a glimpse inside the city.

Rafael Rodriguez moved to the Charlotte area three years ago and fell in love with the Queen City. He says many Latinos feel the same way.

's8220;It'ss great to be here. It'ss a great city to raise your family,'s8221; he said. 's8220;We want to definitely be a part of this city.

Rafael Rodriguez wanted to create a newcomer'ss guide to Charlotte for the Hispanic community.

Rodriguez co-founded DescubreCharlotte.com with the father of his daughter's8217;s friend. The Web site provides Spanish speakers with information on public services, events, nightlife and job opportunities.

's8220;All the Web sites that were out there were basically in English,'s8221; Rodriguez said. 's8220;We didn'st have something in Spanish that would serve the Hispanic community as a newcomer'ss guide when they come to Charlotte.

After more than a year in the making, DescubreCharlotte.com launched in March. So far, it has been a success.

We are getting more than 300,000 hits per month,'s8221; said Rodriguez. 's8220;We'sre here to stay. We'sre not a fly-by-night project

Rodriguez currently employs seven people who help with translation, design and gathering information. He hopes to move the site'ss headquarters from his Indian Trail home to Matthews.
