International IT solutions provider (http://www.us.logicalis.com/), Logicalis, announced the winner of its Pump Up My Portal enterprise portal remodel contest. Chris Sandlin, an IT manager with Keihin Michigan Manufacturing, LLC, is the recipient of a $25,000 portal assessment and recommendations report. The contest entrants were businesses and non-profit organizations that could demonstrate that their enterprise portals were clumsy, outdated and inadequate for the demands of the organization.
The purpose of an enterprise portal (http://www.us.logicalis.com/ep/) is to establish a secure, customizable, browser-based interface that
allows employees, customers and partners to access information and interact with colleagues from any location, said Shaun Olsen, Logicalis vice president of Consulting Services. While
portals can provide an organization with an amazing array of communications and technology resources, they can also provide quite a few headaches if they are not functioning properly.
Logicalis has gained a wealth of experience from different customers with a broad range of unique situations and requirements. This experience has allowed us to develop a solid
methodology for avoiding headaches and ensuring our customers realize the full potential that enterprise portals can deliver.
If anyone can attest to the importance of having a streamlined, user-friendly portal it is Sandlin. His company uses a portal to communicate with its suppliers and customers and also for
posting items, orders and transactions. The problem is that Keihin has four different manufacturing facilities in North America. His current portal'ss inability to consolidate the
necessary information - combined with various compatibility issues - has made it necessary for his company to use three different enterprise portals.
Operating three different portals creates a myriad of different problems, both for my team and for our suppliers, Sandlin said. One portal might be good for a specific requirement, such
as printing barcodes, but it doesn'st have the quality ratings that our suppliers demand. On top of that all three portals offer completely different user experiences.
What I need is one consolidated portal that provides an easy-to-understand user interface for my suppliers while still maintaining all of the resources and functions that make my life
easier, Sandlin continued. Logicalis can deliver that.
The use of enterprise portals by businesses and organizations is nothing new. They reached a high level of popularity in the late 1990s, modeled after public portals, such as AltaVista,
AOL, Excite and Yahoo!. However, the enterprise portal is enjoying a resurgence in recent years as businesses and organizations adopt Web 2.0 standards. The advent of social media as a
major communications network has played a significant role in bringing about this revival.
