Below are the top 10 speaking tips for accented speakers submitted by Anne Maki, Secretary of CORSPAN; (Corporate Speech Pathology Network )
1. Always maintain good eye contact with the person to whom you are speaking.
2. Take in a deep breath before speaking to better project your voice toward your listener and to be clearly heard.
3. Use good communication etiquette. Avoid interrupting others or speaking over them.
4. Pronounce words precisely and avoid leaving out sounds at the end of the words.
5. If you are asked to repeat, speak more slowly and concentrate on saying words clearly.
6. Pause periodically, giving your listener time to catch up to what you have just said.
7. Use gestures and facial expressions to help convey meaning in conversation.
8. Spell out or write words that your listener does not understand.
9. Repeat your message if necessary or requested, but try changing the key word to see if it makes the message come across more clearly.
10. Ask others if they understand you. Watch for puzzled facial expressions, repeated head-nodding and other non-verbal clues that tell you the listener really
doesn'st understand you but is trying to be polite.
