Ron Prosser of the The Prosser Group Demonstrates a UtilityScale Command...

Energy storage and distributed energy generation like solar presents a new set of opportunities and challenges for the utility grid. The Prosser Group (http://www.theprossergroup.com), in conjunction with PG's38;E, ConEd of New York, Sam Six Corporation, and CALM Energy, present a vision for managing urban electrical congestion and load pockets. The demonstration was held as part of the U.S. China Clean Energy Forum (http://www.cleanenergyforum.org) Conference being held from Feb 12th - Feb 17th, 2009.

Utilities in the U.S. face ever increasing usage demands. With the introduction of plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs) by nearly every major automotive manufacturer over the next two years, consumption can only go up. The solution is not to build more power plants, but to intelligently manage the peaks and troughs in electricity demand through a mix of newly available technologies, according to The Prosser Group'ss CEO, Ron Prosser. The key enablers are energy storage, smart meters, and collaboration tools that drive situational awareness and rapid response for utilities to efficiently manage their resources.

The successful demonstration describes a day in the life of a utility'ss control center in the summer of 2015. As the utility encounters transformer failures in a load pocket, it is able to utilize energy storage, co-generation, photovoltaic solar power, and contractual load curtailment to increase supply and reduce load. According to Vic Shao, VP of The Prosser Group, time is of the essence in these types of situations, as failures, if not properly contained, tend to cascade and lead to more failures. Managing through the problem with distributed sources of power such as wind and solar requires a new generation of smart management tools that provide a constant stream of actionable intelligence.

The full vision of the load pocket management solution, including energy storage, distributed power generation, and smart command and control tools, could significantly improve operational efficiency for a utility, potentially saving it tens of millions of dollars every year in fines due to outages. It will also reduce the need to build new power plants. Pilot trials of this comprehensive solution for utilities will be conducted beginning in 2009.
