Its not Just What You Know its Who You Know Informal and SocialNetworking...

Having worked for large vendors throughout her IT&T career, Leesa Fogarty, Director and Founder of the Community of Interest for IT, Security, Risk Management and Compliance Executives realised that if she could only get her customers talking - they would resolve their challenges in half the time at half the cost - and also find the people they needed for their projects.

Just over a year ago, during yet another IT merger Leesa started her network using LinkedIN. Today she facilitates business opportunities, joint ventures with organisations onshore and offshore and actively sources people throughout her Community for its members.

Finding a job in today s risk averse market is definitely no longer just about what you know.

I spent three days last week interviewing candidates for a job in our company that should never have been sat in front of us. Half of them didnt even know what job they were applying for. I would have had to pay that agent 30 percent of the OTE offer and for what, Leesa stated. Today I was resourcing for one of the Big4 firms Risk Management and Audit teams. Using LinkedIN as our backbone, my Community is built on the Internet's first relationship-powered job network that allowsManagers to go beyond what they can glean from resumes and interviews by getting feedback on the reliability and work habits of the candidate from their industry peers. My EY contact has been overwhelmed with members of our community seeking his opportunity - qualified, interested, savvy - and better still the member already knows these people.

June marked the launch of the exclusive 2005/2006 Risk Management, IT, Security and Compliance Community of Interest Business CXO RoundTable series. It brought together technology and business experts, senior executives, and thought leaders across the country to explore the changing regulatory and compliance business landscape and critical issues affecting this industry. These Roundtables were moderated discussions with a free flowing exchange of ideas. The audience included senior business leaders, technologists, and CXO professionals with a direct interest in the evolution and deployment of technology as an enabler of regulatory controls and compliance across many of Australia s largest companies including Telstra, Coles Myer, National Australia Bank, Department of Infrastructure, Toyota Motor Corporation and Tattersalls.

These RoundTables have been fantastic. Our Melbourne survey responses indicated that everyone who attended believed it delivered value and that they would recommend it to someone else. That was a great response for our first RoundTable. Leesa remarked.

To follow this success, September kicked off the Banking Industry Executive RoundTable series at the stunning Waterfront Restaurant in Sydney. The Commonwealth Bank and Colonial First State enjoyed the finest of Sydney cuisine and Harbour views whilst exploring the highly topical issue of vendor governance and compliance.

It appears that IT executives are natural networkers when it comes to their projects. Linux, the Internet and peer to peer file sharing were all born this way. But when it comes to career or business development, we tend not to take a systematic approach to networking. LinkedIN facilitates that. The names and profiles of our Community members are visible, but a user can't get contact information unless the target agrees to an introduction.

Informal networking appears to have been a key measure of this Communities success and the sharing of Best Practice and experience around key projects is possibly the largest contributor to people s satisfaction within the Community - especially around highly topical issues such as compliance and governance. Thought leadership in this space is being cultivated every moment someone within this community touches another member.
