Kanata, Ontario (Vocus) June 11, 2008 -- BelAir Networks, the leading provider of broadband wireless mesh networks, is leading the industry with high-performance wireless mesh solutions that support more video cameras than any other vendor for mission-critical video security networks. With quad- and dual- radios connected to a switched mesh backhaul and delivering speeds of up to 35 megabits per second per link, BelAir Networks equipment provides the interoperability, broadband capacity and low latency necessary for successful wireless video security networks needed to monitor critical infrastructure and support public safety applications.
"BelAir Networks market leadership is driven by our unique, carrier-grade approach to wireless mesh networks, delivering the proven performance, reliability and scalability required for mission-critical video security networks," said Ron Robinson, SVP, Worldwide Sales, BelAir Networks. "Enterprise-grade wireless products are not a great fit for these mission-critical video security networks."
BelAir's patented switched mesh wireless architecture is unique in its ability to carry traffic over multiple mesh hops, supporting up to 140 cameras per wired egress. Dedicated radios and antennas link the mesh nodes in the network together, with each link on a separate frequency, to maintain consistent throughput across the largest possible area. The company's switched mesh design allows network operators to build out broadband capacity all the way to the edge of the network with the lowest latency necessary to support bandwidth-intensive applications such as real-time video streaming used in public safety networks.
BelAir Networks representatives will be available to discuss the company's offerings and deployments at ADT's SecTech'08 Security Technology Expo in Booths #21 and #22 at Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, Atrium Ballroom, 14 Street Entrance, 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. The event will be held June 10-11, 2008 from 8:30 to 11:30am - 1:30 to 5:30pm. At the Expo, ADT's Federal Systems Division, a leading government resource for integrated security solutions will showcase leading edge government security technologies and education in a comprehensive hands-on forum. Media and analysts interested in speaking with a BelAir Networks spokesperson can e-mail PR @ belairnetworks.com.
One of the foremost concerns of city, state and federal organizations today is the protection of critical infrastructure from intrusion or damage. Ports, bridges, airports, train systems and industrial facilities of all kinds are vulnerable to crime, access by unauthorized persons and other threats. Wireless mesh networks are fast becoming a reliable, scaleable and cost-effective solution for supporting real-time video security systems to help protect mission-critical infrastructure from these challenges.
City and Port of Richmond
BelAir Networks equipment is installed in military and commercial ports in Tier 1 port regions on the Atlantic, Pacific and Inland Waters. The City and Port of Richmond California recently installed a public safety communications and video security network based on BelAir equipment to enhance perimeter security for the Port to prevent trespassing by unauthorized persons and to monitor illegal dumping, drug-related activity, and graffiti-related vandalism around the city.
For the Port applications, it was critical that the network support high-quality, real-time video transmission. Working with ADT, the city deployed 82 Axis IP Communications cameras and 31 BelAir Networks wireless nodes to monitor 15 square miles comprising the Port's perimeter and facilities.
In the city, communications support is provided for public safety and government workers and for the video security cameras on the same multi-service wireless mesh network used in the Port. The network delivers both 4.9GHz and secure Wi-Fi access. The city uses 34 IP cameras and a powerful combination of BelAir200 quad-radio, BelAir100T tri-radio and BelAir100 dual-radio nodes.
"New proven wireless mesh technology makes this type of video security system not only practical but a real tool for increasing public safety. We believe the City and Port of Richmond are taking a leadership role by using this technology and that other city and local governments will soon follow," stated John Koch, President of ADT North America.
Emergency Communications Support for the I-35 Bridge Collapse
The strength and scalability of BelAir Networks wireless technology was put to an extreme test in the August 2007 collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis. Rescue and recovery efforts involved multiple departments and crossed many jurisdictional lines including federal, state and municipal.
In the hours and weeks following the tragedy, the city's new Wi-Fi network comprised of BelAir Networks wireless mesh nodes, and run by USI Wireless in a public-private partnership with the city, was used to transfer huge electronic maps and logistical information to the field. The network also supported the video cameras used to monitor, coordinate and streamline rescue and salvage efforts. It also enabled families and first responders to communicate effectively when cellular services were disrupted. As Joe Caldwell, CEO, USI Wireless explained: "The network did exactly what it was supposed to do. And it did it amazingly well."
BelAir Ready for Duty in Defense, On-Ship, Ship-To-Shore Systems
The company is also designing next generation wireless mesh solutions for a broad range of Armed Forces applications. The BelAir200D and BelAir100D Wireless Mesh Node for Defense Applications include 802.11n features and support for the 4.4 GHz frequency band -- designated in the US and NATO countries for military fixed and mobile communications.
Building on its success in delivering high-performance wireless mesh solutions for both temporary Defense installations (including emergency, disaster recovery, and special events networks) and permanent networks, such as SSC Charleston's Wireless Pier Connection Systems (WPCS), the integration of 802.11n features and support for the 4.4 GHz frequency band further enhance BelAir's unique fit for Defense applications.
Wireless Video Security Networks for Transit Systems
Another example of BelAir Networks technology in action is its use in video security networks for state and local transit systems. For this purpose the company developed the BelAir100M which brings fixed network reliability to mobile applications and is the first wireless mesh node to offer high-performance seamless mobility in vehicles travelling up to 150 mph.
The modular architecture and multi-frequency support inherent in the BelAir100M maximizes the network investment made by a city, public safety agency or mass transit authority in their wireless mesh infrastructure. On the backhaul, the BelAir100M can support multiple connections to the road or trackside mesh network. On the access side, the node can connect to multiple standards based in-vehicle devices (including video cameras, as well as Wi-Fi enabled laptops and phones).
