Internationally Renowned Keynote Speakers Headline 9th Annual Transportation Summit Westin DFW Airport Irving, Texas August 8-11, 2006
Attendees of the Ninth Annual Transportation Summit will have a special opportunity to hear and learn from keynote speakers who play pivotal roles in the transportation industry. Over the course of the four day summit held in Irving, lawmakers, state officials, and other transportation notables will share their own experiences and articulate issues currently affecting the industry itself and thus issues impacting all who the industry touches.
July 16, 2006 -- Attendees of the Ninth Annual Transportation Summit will have a special opportunity to hear and learn from keynote speakers who play pivotal roles in the transportation
industry. Over the course of the four day summit held in Irving, lawmakers, state officials, and other transportation notables will share their own experiences and articulate issues
currently affecting the industry itself and thus issues impacting all who the industry touches.
Immediately prior to the Summit which begins the afternoon of Tuesday, August 8, Texas State Senator John Carona will hold the Senate Transportation and Homeland Security Committee
Hearing where interim charges will be discussed. Senator Carona will be joined by his Senate colleagues including Committee Vice Chair Gonzalo Barrientos and Committee Members Kenneth
Armbrister, Kim Brimer, Rodney Ellis, Florence Shapiro, Eliot Shapleigh, Jeff Wentworth and Tommy Williams.
The Summit kicks off Tuesday, August 8 at 1:00 p.m. with two Special General Sessions examining issues currently facing the transportation industry. U.S. Congressman Ted Poe will lead the
session titled 's8220;Lessons Learned: Katrina and Rita's8221; that will discuss the effects that the previous year's8217;s catastrophic hurricanes had upon transportation.
Mark Yachmetz, Associate Administrator for Railroad Development, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), David Horner, Chief Council, Federal Transit Association (FTA) and Julie Nelson,
Deputy Administrator and Chief Counsel, U.S. Maritime Administration, will participate in a session titled 's8220;Transportation: A Multimodal Vision for the Future.'s8221; Marion Blakey,
Administrator, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Richard Capka, Administrator, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are also invited.
Wednesday, August 9 will spotlight Texas Senator John Carona. Senator Carona is currently serving his fourth term as State Senator and maintains the position of the Chair of the Senate
Committee on Transportation and Homeland Security.
U.S. Congressman James Oberstar of Minnesota will be the Wednesday luncheon speaker. The senior Democrat on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee which has jurisdiction over
America's8217;s surface transportation, freight and passenger rail, the inland waterway system, international maritime commerce, the Economic Development Administration, and the federal
clean water program. Oberstar serves as an ex officio member on the Subcommittees on Aviation, Coast Guard & Maritime Transportation Public Buildings & Economics. He is also the
former Chair of the Subcommittee on Aviation, the Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight, and the Subcommittee on Economic Development.
Thursday breakfast features Thomas Madison Jr., New York State's8217;s Commissioner of Transportation. During his tenure at the New York Department of Transportation, Madison helped
implement a nation-wide reorganization plan focusing on the Department's8217;s stakeholders and customers, as well as championed legislation promoting Transportation Development
Partnerships. In 2005, Madison worked to educate the public in regard to the importance of the $2.9 billion Rebuild and Renew New York Transportation Bond Act's8212;an initiative that, as
a result, was embraced and overwhelmingly approved by New York voters.
Marion Blakey, Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, is the invited speaker for Thursday's8217;s luncheon. Marion C. Blakey was appointed by President George W. Bush in
2002. During her administration, the FAA has engaged in contentious negotiations with labor unions, including the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA), the Professional
Airways Systems Specialists (PASS), and the National Association of Air Traffic Specialists (NAATS).
Keynote speakers for Friday's8217;s breakfast include Delos Smith, President and Chief Economist for Delos Smith and Associates, and U.S. Congressman Michael Burgess. Mr. Smith is a
senior economic consultant for the American Bus Association. He frequently shares his notable perspective on the impact of economic trend lines upon business, various television networks,
and the internet. In addition to being regularly featured on USA Radio, AP Radio, GEM Radio, and James Dick Radio network, he is also a regular guest on CNBC, Bloomberg, Fox Cable, and
ABC. Congressman Burgess serves as a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee which maintains principal responsibility for legislative oversight concerning issues including the
supply and delivery of energy and interstate and foreign commerce.
U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison brings the Summit to a close at lunch on Friday. Senator Hutchison is currently serving her 13th year in the Senate. In 2000, Senator Hutchison was
elected Vice Chair of the Senate Republican Conference and thus became the only woman serving as one of the top five leaders of Senate Republicans. In the 107th Congress, the Senator
served as Chair and Ranking Republican of the Commerce Committee'ss Subcommittee on Aviation where she played a pivotal role in drafting the landmark airline security bill passed by
Congress after the September 11 terrorist attacks. At the beginning of the 108th Congress in 2003, she became Chair of the Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Subcommittee which
enabled her to set policies regarding Amtrak, ports and port security, and railroad shipping issues.
Five Special General Sessions will provide a fresh perspective on issues that are sure to impact all currently involved with the transportation industry. In addition, the 38 Break-Out
Sessions will cover a wide breadth of transportation issues that may be particularly intriguing or relevant to the individual. Attendees are thus able to customize their experience at the
