May 21, 2005 -- When Mendocino County's' Measure H, banning the use of Genetically Modified Organisms passed in March 2004, it gained international attention. But no one foresaw the opportunity it would create for an exciting new business. That month, the Elk Cove Inn & Spa opened its organic restaurant, 'ZEBO, earning quick acclaim from "American Spa Magazine," the "Santa Rosa Press Democrat" Food & Wine writer and KRCB Radio's Sunday morning "Mouthful" host, Michelle Anna Jordan. Nationally recognized Restaurateur and Chef, Ira Mittelman takes the reins for the 2005 season.
Chef Ira brings a zest for southern and exotic world flavors to unique, new American cuisine. He's acquired locally baked artisan breads to complement generous salads of fresh greens that still speak of their morning in the garden. And he's perfected the house made pasta and desserts that add to the menu's essence of freshness and care. The seafood is only the freshest available and the fowl and beef are free-range and hormone-free.
Mittelman believes that with his skills, "The natural beauty, intimate, ocean view dining room, fresh, organic ingredients and local wines meld to form a perfect blend of relaxation and enjoyment." And he should know. Chef Ira developed two successful restaurants in highly competitive Portland, Oregon. He was first to bring new American cuisine to the Rocky Mountains, hosting celebrities at an exclusive Montana resort, and he has performed as Executive Chef, responsible for feeding up to 600 guests a day at "crazier places". 'Here, in this healing environment," he says, "My dreams of creating the quintessential dining experience can come to fruition."
Elk Cove Inn & Spa Owner David Lieberman adds, "Everything we do is focused on rest and rejuvenation." A former Silicon Valley "Type A" himself, Lieberman understands the stress and strain of busy lives. Still the entrepreneur, he's built a destination resort on the secluded North Coast that caters to those in need of a brief escape. "From the moment guests arrive we pamper them with peace and quiet, privacy, comfort, nurturing, healing body therapy, and meals that satisfy all the senses. In the process, we've discovered they find it a complete joy to get away from television, phones, and Internet access."
ZEBO graciously serves inn guests, local residents, and visitors Thursday thru Sunday evenings from 5:30 to 9:30 PM, February thru November, and after Christmas, for the New Year Holiday week. Entrees range $14 to $29. Regional boutique wines highlight the menu and many are available by the glass.
