Detroit Lakes Minnesota is a Haven for Runners in August



Detroit Lakes is running, swimming and biking this summer. There are two big events for the serious and not too serious athletes. Both events are family-friendly and will draw participants and spectators from around Minnesota and the Midwest. Fair Hills Resort and the Cabins at Five Lakes Resort are the perfect place to stay during the events. They are close to the races and yet far enough to still be restful.

The first big athletic event is the second annual Castaway Club Triathlon (http://www.pickleevents.com/events/castawaytri/) starting at 8:00 am on Saturday, August 20th at Pelican Lake in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. The event includes a 2/3-mile swim in Pelican Lake, a 20-mile bike ride through the picturesque Minnesota Lakes Country, and a fast 5-mile run. After the race, the athletes and their families and friends are invited to stay for lunch and activites, which include a hot tub, ride a zipline, and tryout the climbing wall.

The Castaway Triathlon is only 1 mile away from Fair Hills Resort and 16 miles away from the Cabins at Five Lakes Resort.

The second sporting event is The Dick Beardsley ½ Marathon and 5K Race/Walk held on Saturday, September 10. This year is the 10th running of this very popular Detroit Lakes race. Known as "the Young, the Old, and the Ugly," the race will feature 2 Minnesota running legends, Dick Beardsley and Carrie Tollefson racing with former Olympic runner, Don Kardong. The events begin Friday, September 9th with a pre-race spaghetti dinner, which is open to runners and spectators.

The Dick Beardsley ½ Marathon starts only 12 miles away from Fair Hills Resort and 14 miles away from the Cabins at Five Lakes Resort.
