Nine out of every ten people interviewed booked a holiday last year through one of their local travel agents. Six of these people had not even considered booking online. The other three
people had considered booking online, but went to their local travel agent in the end.
The most popular reasons for opting for the local traffic agent were:
- ease of use the travel agent helped them to choose the type of holiday and select from alternative destinations;
- brochures were readily available to look through and to take home;
- advice and recommendations specific to their chosen holiday and destination;
- handling the booking and paperwork;
- advice on discount and last minute deals.
For 60% of those interviewed, the reasons for not considering to look and book online were very much assumptions along the lines of the thinking given above. People expected that an
internet search would not be easy. They did not know where to start. There were no glossy brochures or magazines to browse through. There was nobody to give advice or make
recommendations. They would have to arrange all the bookings and paperwork themselves. And they could not take advantage of last minute deals available through a travel agent. Six out of
ten people held the views stated here.
The 30% who initially did consider an internet booking, eventually finished up at the local travel agent's offices, because the online websites fell short in one or more of the areas
stated above. So ease of use seems to be the main driving force behind the decisions taken by holiday makers.
