Some simply watched from the shore as the tide of business and tourism got lower. Not the folks at Sea Side Reservations--Baja, who have surged into northern Baja on a wave of excitement and a belief that their innovative company can create new opportunities for this scenic and accessible part of Mexico.
Sea Side, a vacation property rental and management company which began operations several years ago in Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco), Sonora, on mainland Mexico, has set down roots in
Rosarito Beach and Santa Barbara at Bajamar (Ensenada). Their goal is two-fold: to expand their operations into Baja and to help the tourism and rental markets in the region set sail.
According to Michelle Herbison, co-founder and co-owner, "The company was created because we wanted to be the number one full-service vacation property management company in Rocky Point.
We ultimately achieved that and, to our happy surprise, we also became the number-one employer in Sonora!" Pretty heady stuff, considering that the concept was incubated in her living
room, and the logo for the company was designed on a desktop.
Sea Side went on to open offices in San Carlos, also on the mainland.
As a vacation property management business, Sea Side works with both owners and renters.
Says Herbison, "We offer our owners peace of mind when they are miles away; they know that the bills are being paid, the property is not in shambles, and that it is, in fact, making a
return on their investment." For renters, there is security in knowing they are receiving a quality property that meets Sea Side standards. Reservations are offered online
around-the-clock, and Sea Side also provides renters a toll-free number for bookings with their personal reservationist.
Herbison and her husband Josh, another co-owner, moved to Rosarito about two years ago with their son. Here, they again saw the need for a professional vacation property management
company that would work on behalf of both owners and renters, ensuring that each party could come away with the optimum rental experience. Key to their Baja strategy is the fact that they
perceive the strong rental market in Baja as a platform for a real estate market that will eventually recharge.
"People who vacation in Baja buy in Baja," explains Mona Key, vice president of sales for Sea Side. "It is vital to us and to owners who might one day choose to sell, or even continue
renting, that everything from the customer service for both owners and renters, to the facilities and amenities, is top notch."
Numbers don't lie and statistics show that approximately 75% of Sea Side's customers are repeat users of their services (this compares to a 46% repeat rate globally, based on a survey by
Hotels.com). Key believes that this directly reflects Sea Side's focus on customer service.
"Our goal is to be stellar, for the owner and the renter. Most reservation companies typically are geared to the renter, but we think it works both ways," she says. According to Key, if
renters are dreaming of a bottle of wine, a personal chef, or a big screen television, Sea Side will make it available to them...even if it means helping the owner of the rental purchase
a giant TV through Sea Side's corporate vendors.
"We listen to the renters and to the owners and are proactive in doing what needs to be done to make the experience work for both parties," Key assures.
Virtually all of the Sea Side management currently lives in Baja, and Herbison - who with her co-owner husband Josh is raising her family here - is deeply committed to seeing the region
flourish.
"We are all in this together. What's good for Baja is good for us...and through Sea Side we are going to try and do what's good for everybody!"
