Optelecs Compact Awarded Top Independent Living Design Award

At their 90th Anniversary, the British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA) awarded one of the 2007 UK Independent Living Design Awards to Optelec's Compact+. An innovative bed rail, a four wheeled walker that converts to a seat shared the honor of receiving an award. Sue Norris, the head of England's Centre for Evidence-based Purchasing, part of National Health Service - Purchasing and Supply Agency (NHS PASA) and chair of the judges said, "We felt that the three prizewinners had made subtle but significant improvements to the safety and quality of life for the users of their products."

The Independent Living Design Awards aim to recognize innovative products that assist independent living. Products are judged on innovation; aesthetics; usability and practicality; contribution to lifestyle, enhancement of quality of life and finally clarity of user instructions and literature. Products from all sectors of healthcare are submitted for the award. These awards are organized by the magazine, Assistive Technologies, whose readers vote for the companies they consider have given the best service in the fields of mobility, orthotics, prosthetics and rehabilitation.

The judges said, "(The Compact+) was a very neat, aesthetically pleasing product that demonstrated its ease of use in many different situations for partially sighted people." User Mr. Donald Marks, 80, from Tunbridge Wells - UK, cannot read anything without assistance. He says, "I looked at all the 'toys' on the market and selected the Compact+ and it's become my left hand. It's compact, functional and easy to use."
