Employees of The Doe Run Company (http://www.herculaneum2008.com/). In June, the company announced (http://www.doerun.com/whatwedo/herculaneum.aspx). "The facility holds a unique spot in our city's history, after serving as the first major employer. But we also realize that without the community's support, we wouldn't be here today."
Herculaneum Today & Tomorrow was recently approved for a $10,000 TRIM grant to help the city achieve a Tree City U.S.A. designation, as part of the bicentennial celebration. The funds
will allow for the purchase of a piece of equipment to be used to prepare for the planting of 200 trees that will help Herculaneum become a Tree City U.S.A. The first bicentennial tree,
which stands on Mott Street on Doe Run property, was officially dedicated and marked with a granite plaque during kick-off festivities.
Herculaneum was founded in 1808 by Moses Austin and Samuel Hammond. Nearly 80 years later, the St. Joe Lead Company acquired a 540-acre tract of land along the Mississippi River. In 1890,
construction began on the smelter, now The Doe Run Company's Herculaneum smelter. The new facility helped bring jobs and residents back to the once abandoned city, and marked its rebirth
as an influential community along the Mississippi River.
Since then, Doe Run and its predecessors have helped finance and build several city firsts, such as the first steamboat crossing, ferryboat stop and firehouse. Doe Run has also assisted
in the creation of Bates Memorial Park, Dunklin Fletcher Memorial Park, Joachim Golf Course and the Tri-City Little League Complex ballfields.
Special events are planned for each month to celebrate the city's 200-year history. The bicentennial will culminate with a similar three-day festival in October 2008. For more information
