One of Kansas City's most anticipated football events of the season is celebrating 15 years of Red Friday traditions. This year, the Chiefs Red Coaters and the Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation, proudly present a historical 2007 Red Friday.
For 15 years, the annual Red Friday event, which has consisted of magazine sales, luncheon and a pep rally, has been celebrated the Friday before the first regular season home game,
raising more than $350,000 for local charities. According to Ken Blume, director of development & premium seating, most fans celebrate Red Friday before every home game, but the
official Red Friday kick off only occurs once a year. "Chiefs fans show their support every Friday before home games by wearing red and displaying other memorabilia, but it all kicks off
with the day long Red Friday events before the home opener," explained Blume.
Thanks to Jim Shultz, who founded the idea of Red Friday, the event has become a tradition for players, families and fans. "I was inspired by the book 'Hunt for Red October,' and
approached Lamar Hunt with an idea and a name," explained Shultz. "I wanted to launch a pep rally where everyone wore red and came together to support the Chiefs as well as various
charities."
Each season, Red Friday grows and evolves, attracting more and more people. "Red Friday is bigger than I ever imagined it could be," said Shultz. "Now, it's a huge community event in KC
and an opportunity for a lot of people to interact with the players. Fans can attend the pep rally for free and really feel like they are apart of the Chiefs family," he said.
This year's anniversary celebration, will ramp-up at 6:30 a.m. September 21 as more than 500 volunteers distribute a special collector's edition of Red Friday Magazine. Proceeds this year
will benefit select Chiefs players' charities, including TLC for Children and Families (Dustin Colquitt), Donnie Edwards Best Defense Foundation (Donnie Edwards) and Boys & Girls
Clubs of Greater Kansas City (Jarrad Page).
At noon, the Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation will host an exclusive preview luncheon at Arrowhead Pavilion. Special guest panelists included Chiefs Chairman of the Board,
Clark Hunt; President, GM & CEO, Carl Peterson; and voice of the Chiefs, Mitch Holthus. A limited number of tickets are available and can be purchased at www.redfridaykc.org. Complimentary parking will be offered in all Westport surface parking lots to
accommodate everyone. A map of the venue is available at www.kcchiefs.com
