Martial Arts School Fights Hunger in Massachusetts

May 3, 2005 -- During their spring fundraiser, the karate students at Emerald Necklace Budo Martial Arts (www.karateinboston.com) raised over $1,500 for Project Bread, a nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating, preventing, and ultimately ending hunger in Massachusetts. On May 1, students from the karate school also participated in Project Bread's "Walk for Hunger," a 20-mile walk that winds its way through Boston and its surrounding towns.



"In addition to the physical aspects of karate, we focus on building confidence, developing character, and fostering a sense of community," says Jason Gould, Dojo Director and Chief Instructor. "By participating in the fundraiser and then completing the 20-mile walk, my students are demonstrating that they have the focus, discipline, and compassion that are required to be Black Belts in the dojo and in life. I'm very proud of them."



The karate team raised funds through online donations, and by collecting additional contributions from friends, neighbors, and coworkers. According to Project Bread, the money raised by the dojo will provide 55 families with a week's supply of groceries from a food pantry, and will also allow for a mobile food pantry to distribute food to a community in desperate need.



Gould has been conducting traditional karate classes and self-defense programs for adults since October of 2003. The students at Emerald Necklace Budo Martial Arts regularly participate in community service activities as part of their Black Belt training.
