Charleston Harbor Resort amp Marina to Host 2006 Sunfish World Championship Regatta
Just three months remain until the start of the 2006 Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina Sunfish World Championship regatta, which will be held on Charleston Harbor October 1 's8211; 7 this year. Some 97 sailors representing 22 countries have been invited to this prestigious event. And among the competitors, all of whom have all qualified to participate by excelling in previous high-profile regattas, will be three homegrown Charleston sailors.
This prestigious event will be hosted by the Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina in Mt. Pleasant, and will feature the pageantry and glamour befitting a world championship contest. Located just across the harbor from historic Charleston, this 130-room resort combines luxurious accommodations, convenient proximity, spectacular views, and first-rate on-site amenities like golf, dining, and even a water taxi service. With its 459-slip marina, the resort is the perfect site for a world-class regatta. Sailors and their guests at the event will enjoy evening festivities and indulgent southern hospitality throughout their stay.
On the water, this regatta will feature high-caliber competition as some of the best Sunfish racers from around the globe will be on hand to compete. Among them will be 13 previous world champions along with the North and South American and European champions. And, if the formidable roster doesn's8217;t present enough of a challenge, competitors will have their hands full simply navigating Charleston Harbor's8217;s tricky tidal waters.
A cadre of local sailors, sailing enthusiasts, and event planners have pooled their talents to orchestrate this regatta. Though most of the planning is well underway, the organizers are still seeking volunteers to assist with various aspects of the competition, from registration to on the water safety. Additionally, there are still opportunities for companies to get involved at various levels of sponsorship.

The Sunfish is a small (just under 14 feet), single-handed sailboat that has been in production since shortly after it was designed in 1951. It remains the most popular sailboat in the world with over 250,000 having been built, and thousands of individuals credit the Sunfish as the boat that introduced them to the sport of sailing.
