Happn.in - http://happn.in - is a new service that provides insight into local events and issues through the lens of Twitter users. Happn.in filters and collects Twitter trends by city, and provides users with a summary of what'ss being talked about, right now, by people near them.
Happn.in can be used in several ways:
* To stay up-to-date on local issues, events and discussions
* To find nearby people with similar interests
* To conduct research into the history of trends and the differences between cities
* To advertise to a local audience through Happn.in sponsorships
Happn.in already has more than 120,000 subscribers in 65 cities around the world, including Boston, Madrid, New York, Paris, San Francisco, and Sydney. Current and archived lists are
always available on the Happn.in website, and are distributed four times per day through Twitter.
Happn.in was motivated by the desire to make conversations and information on Twitter more relevant by localizing its content. A user may find out about a concert in the park, a new art
exhibit, or a breaking local news story. Perhaps the best way to illustrate Happn.in is through a sample of trends from Chicago, on Monday, June 22nd 2009:
* millennium park (there was a free show there at 8pm)
* american idol auditions (which were occurring that day at the United Center)
* mosquito bites (apparently a result of Chicago'ss weekend rain)
* world bank (who cut the 's09 global growth forecast)
Along with lists of top trending topics for each city, Happn.in shows the discussions surrounding those topics. These discussions reveal local opinion towards the subject matter, and
provide relevent sources with which to further explore them. Also available on the Happn.in website are tools to explore archived data, which can reveal recurring trends, similar cities,
Twitter users who are early trend setters, and users who are closely related by the topics they discuss.
Happn.in also provides businesses and organizations with a way to advertise to a localized audience through Twitter. Anybody who signs up as a Happn.in sponsor will receive three free
sponsorships in the city of their choosing.
