Google And Alexa Ratings Working Together



The recent Google Page Rankings have many people talking. Some long standing top rated Sites have dropped in ranking and other new Sites, like http://yarmouthcounty.com have risen towards the top.



Web Masters, Web Site Owners, and many in the online community are left wondering how this affects them Those whose rankings are dropping after being online for long periods of time are concerned. Those whose Sites have been online for shorter periods of time and who have received good ranking are smiling. While many who are not Web Masters or Web Site Owners are left wondering; "How does this affect me"



For the general online population whether a particular Site, or Web Page, is ranked as a 1, 5, or even 10 means little on the surface. Yet it does warrant further investigation. The Page Ranking done by Google is based upon many factors including traffic to a Site and the relevance of the Site.



To many, including Web Masters and Site Owners, this still seems difficult to understand. It is perhaps better understood when the Google Page Ranking is compared to other online ranking systems like Alexa for example.



To better understand this let's compare a few similar Sites in Yarmouth county and the surrounding areas of Nova Scotia, Canada.



For our purposes here we will look at four similar Sites in the Yarmouth area. The four Sites are aboutyarmouth.com yarmouthonline.ca, yarmouth.org yarmouthcounty.com.



The oldest of the Sites is yarmouth.org and has been online for nearly 9 years and has a Google Ranking of 3/10. Consists of about 803 pages and there are over 3700 pages online that contain the term yarmouth.org.



The newest Site is yarmouthcounty.com online for only three months. This site has a Google Page rank of 4/10. Consists of about 44 pages and there are over 160 pages that contain the term yarmouthcounty.com.



The other two Sites, aboutyarmouth.com and yarmouthonline.ca, have been online for over four years. The aboutyarmouth Site has a Google Ranking of 3/10 and the yarmouthonline Site has a Google Ranking of 4/10.



Google information is not presented in the same manner for .CA Sites and provides fewer readily available stats for the yarmouthonline Site. The aboutyarmouth Site has fewer pages linking to it and containing the term than the other Sites; thus the lower Google ranking.



Now for the Alexa Ranking of these Sites. The highest ranking Site is yarmouth.org at 731,759, ahead of yarmouthcounty.com at 966,179, followed by yarmouthonline and aboutyarmouth respectively. It is interesting to note that yarmouth.org and yarmouthcounty.com are both in Alexa's top one million.



So how does a Web Site like yarmouthcounty.com gain a Google Ranking of 4/10 and move into Alexa's top one million within three months



It is our opinion that since the yarmouthcounty.com has the highest average number of pages linking to it, and highest number of pages containing the term yarmouthcounty.com for the amount of time it has been online that this is a major contributing factor for the positive Google Ranking.



Looking closer at Alexa rank, reach, and page views, for the Sites things become clearer. The yarmouth.org Site is rated by Alexa as having a page reach of 0.6 over 3 months and an average page view of 11.6. While the aboutyarmouth and yarmouthonline reach far less and have far lower page views. yarmouthcounty.com has a reach of .55 per million viewers and average page views of 6.6 per user. Thus comparing the Google Page Rank to the Alexa Stats to the over all time online, number of pages linking to, and containing Domain Name, we can see more clearly why certain Sites like yarmouthcounty.com gain positive rankings.



Now, how does that affect the average person online Well, to be honest based on ranking alone most people will continue to visit the Sites they have always visited. It does mean however that Sites like yarmouthcounty.com obviously work hard at obtaining top rankings, caring for their Site, Site relevance, in a timely and conscientious manner.



So why all the concern if it will not overly affect the way people behave online There are many reasons for this. The one most people think of is becoming more easily found in the Search Engines. Another reason, perhaps a better reason, is to have the best Site available for existing Site users. The second reason is that although the habits of the online public are not likely to change drastically due to the ranking of a Site. The word of mouth of the higher ranking Site which provides quality customerservice and rewarding online experiences will prosper as others are referred to the Site.



So the next time you hear that a particular Site has a certain Google Ranking look deeper. What are the Site users saying about the Site. What is the Customer Service like for the Site Take time to determine how that ranking compares to others who rank the Site. As we've seen here it also helps to see how Google and Alexa Ratings working together.
