Latest FDA Study on Drug Importation Just Another Scare Tactic, Says Rx1.Biz Pharmacy

The FDA's spin of an online pharmacy study intentionally misleads Americans but data suggests many Canadian pharmacies are legitimate.

Winnipeg, Manitoba (PR Web) June 15, 2005 -- A recent study commissioned by the FDA apparently examined 11,000 internet pharmacy websites and reported that only about 1,000 actually sold prescription drugs with fewer than 25% hosted by companies or individuals in Canada. The report, conducted by Virginia based Cyveillance, is the latest scare tactic employed by the FDA to instill fear and doubt in the minds of American patients who consider purchasing their prescription drugs from Canadian pharmacies.

"Although we support an effort to differentiate legitimate Canadian pharmacies from unlicensed and substandard operators, it is not appropriate for the FDA to tar the lot with one brush" says Jason Pankratz, Canadian pharmacist and owner of Rx1.Biz Pharmacy located in Winnipeg, Manitoba (http://www.rx1.biz). "Our pharmacy is licensed, CIPA certified, complies with all Health Canada regulations and has been safely serving over 12,000 American patients for 3 years."

Interestingly, the report indicates that 214 websites appeared to be legitimately hosted from Canada which Pankratz points out is consistent with industry estimates of how many licensed Canadian pharmacies actually mail drugs to American patients. But ironically, 86% of the online stores studied were hosted by companies in the U.S. with most accessible only by linking through spam e-mails. "It appears that the FDA should tidy its own back yard before it marginalizes Canadian pharmacies", adds Pankratz.

Earlier this week Canada's Ambassador to the U.S., Frank McKenna, also made it clear that drugs imported from Canada posed no health risks when he told Associated Press "we don't want the reputation of our pharmaceutical sector sullied by attacks from the United States of America saying that re-imported drugs aren't safe."

In fact, a report by the U.S. General Accounting Office in June, 2004 found that all of the 18 Canadian online pharmacies studied required patients to submit a valid prescription with their orders. In contrast, only 5 of 29 U.S. sites required the same.

Peter Rost, a Pfizer executive says "it's great that the FDA has studied the online pharmacy business. I assume that they will now actually do something with the data and create a program to accredit online pharmacies outside the US that meet FDA standards. Then again, perhaps the current Wild West situation serves a higher political purpose and patient safety isn't really what concerns the FDA."

With the FDA refusing to work with any Canadian entity as long as the trade remains technically illegal, American patients can obtain their own assurance of safety and validity by following a few common sense steps: As with www.rx1.biz, legitimate Canadian online pharmacies will feature a valid provincial license number, a physical address in Canada, a toll free phone number and require a prescription from a U.S. physician along with a completed medical history and allergy profile.

"Contrary to what the FDA would have you believe, you can have piece of mind when ordering from Canada" states Pankratz.

Rx1.biz is a licensed pharmacy located in Winnipeg, Manitoba (license # 32960) and offers safe, convenient and affordable medications. A professionally licensed pharmacist fills all prescriptions. Rx1.Biz is a certified member of the Canadian International Pharmacy Association and has filled more than 100,000 U.S. prescriptions.
