Quiz Site Plentysmartcom Tests Your GoogleFu

Let's face it: we could all be searching better. And as the information available on the Internet continues to grow at a staggering rate, the problem of finding it grows as well. The search engine of choice for many is Google. But very few Google users, even those who use it daily, understand its true power. Enter Plentysmart.com.

Plentysmart's Google quiz starts with a few of the basics: there are questions on whether caps affect search results (they don't), and on the use of quotes to find exact phrases. There is also a question on the use of the minus sign, which is used to exclude words or phrases from results. Many Google users know these already.

However the quiz moves quickly into deeper territory. An excellent example is the use of number ranges. For instance the search "world series" 1970..1975 will return pages containing the exact phrase "world series" and any number from 1970 to 1975. Another question covers the method for finding information within a particular web site, as opposed to on the whole Internet.

According to Ian Compton, President of Plentysmart.com the quiz is meant for teaching more than for testing. That's good because the average score hovers around nine out of fifteen, and according to Compton a number of people closely associated with Google were said to have had some difficulty on the quiz as well. It is one of the tougher tests on the Plentysmart.com website, which has quizzes covering subjects from celebrity baby names to blackjack strategy to the New York subway system.

The last section of the fifteen-question Google quiz addresses math and number conversions. Did you know that Google can be used as a calculator A currency converter An English unit to metric converter How about for getting current stock quotes It's all there.

So if you'd like to improve your Google-Fu, click over to www.plentysmart.com and see how well you do. The link is available on the home page, in the "Computers" section. And for easy reference, the quiz has a link to Google's help pages. Good luck and good searching.
