Dakota Curling Club to Open in Burnsville Minnesota Newest Curling Club in the Nation
Curling enthusiasts have a new opportunity to engage in their sport at the newest curling club in the country - the Dakota Curling Club, based at the Burnsville Ice Arena in Burnsville, Minnesota.
"The Twin Cities has well over a thousand Curlers, and there is only one club - the St. Paul Curling Club. While an excellent club, St Paul is at or near capacity, with few opportunities for non-members to get on the ice and curl." says Paul Ellarby, President of Dakota Curling Club. "If the Olympics generate anything like the interest it did last time Curling was a medal sport, there will be no place for people to get involved. Consequently, we decided to form a new club to start soon after the Olympics, allowing those who are interested to try it out."
The Dakota Curling Club will use the Burnsville Ice Arena to curl in, taking advantage of existing ice rather than building an entirely new structure. "We have been working with the Twin Cities Curling Association for a while, formulating our long-term plans to open a new curling facility, but for now we have decided to utilize existing ice so we could curl quickly. The people at Burnsville Ice Arena have been very supportive of our efforts, making ice available for successive weeks at the same time in the Spring, and again in the Fall. The Twin Cities Curling Association is providing invaluable help in getting Dakota Curling Club up and running, and we will continue working with them to accomplish our long-term plans."
Dakota Curling Club will run a 12-week league, with 6 weeks in the Spring and 6 weeks in the Fall. The Spring session will start on Saturday April 1st, with 2 draws at 9:00am and 11:00am.The Fall session will start on Saturday August 12th, with 2 draws at 6:30pm and 8:30pm. With 5 curling sheets, this will enable a minimum of 80 curlers - 20 teams of 4 curlers each - to participate in the league.
